Before buying anything, I'd suggest reading this first:
- Making sense of the most often recommended BMW diagnostic tools & cable interfaces (1 (http://www.bimmerfest.com/forums/showthread.php?t=561237)) & BMW factory & dealer programming, coding, and diagnostic software such as INPA, EDIABAS, NCS Expert, DIS, EasyDIS, Progman (1 (http://www.4shared.com/folder/BYkNcdJW/_online.html)) (2 (ftp://94.212.182.18/)) (3 (http://www.4shared.com/dir/LfFoCBq2/An_EasyDis_Machine.html)) (4 (http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=451145)) (5 (http://www.bimmerfest.com/forums/showpost.php?p=5696884&postcount=15)) (6 (http://forums.bimmerforums.com/forum/showthread.php?t=1374483)) (7 (http://narod.ru/disk/857052001/www.bmwpost.ru_INPA.rar.html)) (8 (http://www.bimmerfest.com/forums/If%20your%20INPA%20Cable%20connects%20to%20USB%20p ort%20and%20have%20ftdi%20chip%20you%20can%20downl oad%20latest%20version%20of%20drivers%20here:%20ht tp://www.ftdichip.com/Drivers/VCP.htm)) (9 (http://forums.bimmerforums.com/forum/showthread.php?t=1613468)) & related BMW diagnostic-tool forums (1 (http://bmwcoders.com/)) (2 (http://www.bmwcoding.com/)) (3 (http://forums.bimmerforums.com/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=233)) (4 (http://ecubb.bmwecu.org/board/)) (5 (http://www.bimmerforums.co.uk/forum/f99/))

The key thread above is for the E39 but almost all of it applies to the E46, including the software.

However, there is an E46 equivalent thread on this forum, which you can easily find using the search button.

I am lookin for a tool as well and I have noticed that carsoft has two variations one is on ebay and or Amazon for like 40 bux but the reviews are rubbish. Like viruses and not being able to install the program. However the carsoft website has great reviews but the unit I'm looking to buy is almost 400 $. . is it all its cracked up to be. Easy to install/use or am I just going to waste my money
