NAPA currently has all grades of Mobil1, including the coveted 0W-40, for $5.89/quart.

I was also able to buy the Mahle (not Mann) oil filter for $6.80 and Pentosin ATF1 (substitute for ESSO LT71141) for $13.20/liter. Clerk said the filter and ATF price was under the same promotion as the Mobil1 but I did not see those advertised.

Enjoy!

Everytime i see one of these napa threads it never ends up being true. I walk in and its like triple the price im expecting. Royal purple was over $20 a quart last time i was there.

Their current paper ad gives 20% off everything in the store, with some obvious exceptions. Motor oil and chemicals are excluded but I got 20% off the Pentosin ATF1 anyway. Picked up three more liters this afternoon for a total of 7.

Happy hunting.

I need a case myself. I wonder how that compares with my favorite store (http://www2.costco.com/Common/Search.aspx?Browse=1&whse=BD_563&topnav=bdoff&search=motor%20oil&N=0&Ntt=motor%20oil&cm_re=1_en-_-Top_Left_Nav-_-Top_search&lang=en-US), Costco (at least for the 10W versions of Mobil1).

OK. I just looked. Mobil1 (not the coveted 0wstuff though) is currently around 6.56/quart at Costco ...

Just my 2 cents, but I'll stick with the 5w-30 BMW (Castrol) Oil. It's approved, and it's thinner. And this is coming from a pretty big Mobil 1 fan. M1 75/90 doing in my diff tomorrow after I get my 14mm allen socket. I run BMW motor oil and Manual trans fluid in both my Bmw's. I run the OSG oil in my 335i's custom built diff and M1 in the 530's. Thos are the only 2 lubes I deviated from.

If you like thinner viscosity, while sticking with BMW approved oils, you might consider Castrol Edge 0W-30 available at AutoZone stores. I've been using that or the BMW stuff pretty much exclusively since new...now at 185k miles.

Dam, didn't even hit me until tonight, this sale applies to my wife's C300! Merc specs 0w-40 Mobil as factory fill. Even has the cap and sticker. That's a awsome sale. And I was at Napa this morning get my 14mm hex socket for the diff. Doh! Checking tomorrow to see if the sale is still going on. Grabbing 8 or 9 qts for her car. Dealers charge a crazy $80-$100 for a oil change depending on the stealership. + Taxes and shop fees of 20% at some dealers. So the 100 quickly becomes 127. Thanks for the heads up.

Right now our local Advance Auto is running Pennzoil Platinum (full synthetic) with K&N oil filter for $30 with $10 mail in rebate. This combo good for our 2000 528i? I've always changed our vehicle oils, read the above "How to", just wondered about this combo. thanks.

Two issues, one the oil is not BMW approved (if that matters to you) and while K&N makes a filter for the 528i, it is unlikely Advance Auto will stock it. Also, I am unsure who is the oem manufacturer for K&N. Most of the USA made filters for BMW have issues with the o-ring seals not fitting properly and leaking.

Pennzoil Platinum is otherwise a great oil.

Saw the Chevron dino oil at Costco today for $2.41/quart while the synthetic mobil1 was three times that.

Didn't synthetic used to only be about twice dino oil in the past?

That is the only Mobil 1 synthetic that meets the BMW LL-01 specification. It is also one of only a handful of "approved" oils by BMWNA.

Walmart has Mobil 1 0W-5 in 5 quart jugs for 24.95. Everyday price.

Bluebee: I generally like Costco products, but the Chevron motor oil is pretty cheap. I used it in my other cars and it was not that great at all.

Pretty good price for Mann filters at RM. $7.55 per Mann filter with free shipping at Autohauz for orders of more than $50.

1. If the jag says meets "BMW LL-01" specifications then it's good for your car.

2. Those numbers are approximate. 0 or 5, 30 or 40. They are not exactly "40" or "30". They are around those numbers. The real viscosity of the Mobil 0-40 was found to be very close to that of the BMW 5-30.

So the answer to your question is that both are excellent for your 157,000 engine.

Here are the current BMW recommendations:
http://www.bmwusa.com/Standard/Content/Owner/SyntheticEngineOils.aspx

Of the listed oils, the only ones you can find are the BMW oil (at the dealer) and the Mobil 1 0w-40 and Castrol Edge 0w-30. The Valvoline and Pennzoil products are only available online, the versions recommended by BMW are not sold in stores (many have looked, check labels carefully).

Not to hijack the thread or change the forum, just my note on Royal Purple. Not trying to start a "what oil is better" or anything like that but I'd love to hear, if this is your first time using RP, how it turns out over time for you.
My story Believe it or not, YMMV
I was a faithful Catsrol guy with my E34/I6 and one day Royal Purple was on sale (not really, free filter) anyway I gave it a try. My E34 had 64,000 on it when I bought it and had 200,000 when I tried the RP. Up until trying the RP my temp gauge sat with the needle touching the left side of the the 12 o'clock mark. No space between the needle and the mark and no overlap. After less then 100 miles there was a clear gap between the the needle and the mark. Running cooler! :) Also in all the years of ownership I had maintained a gas average 21.8mpg. Running RP it dropped below 21mpg and in under 10,000 miles I'd used about 2 qts of oil. I switched back to castrol. Oil consumption dropped and the temp returned to "Normal" as well as MPG.

After reading Bob's the Oil guy these things do happen. I would have thought the reduced temp would have been b/c of reduced friction and then potentially increasing HP (I didn't notice anything while driving) While my driving style was the same as was my routine I imagine the increase HP for what there was needed more gas. Again Bob's the oil guy talks of switching grades and manufacturer's and seeing changes in MPG.

I have not changed the oil in my e39 as of yet, still have a green box to go. Not sure what I'll refill with yet but am leaning to...
