Had sum rare free time...so I did the Tuner Mod based on the instructions found here: http://www.bimmerfest.com/forums/showthread.php?t=245819
You only use "C" "D" and "E" ..."E" is a ground, so U can use any spot in the car to ground it. Im not 100% certain why the OP had 5 wires listed.

Works as advertised

Next up is the L7. The Tuner mod can be done by a first timer...Please dont try it with the L7. There are people out there who specialize in repairing them at a good price.

Anywayz, The sub channels are out. I took a peek inside and would not suggest the repair if you havent done work in this field. Im not sure if this is outside of my soldering skills...we shall see. ;)

I attempted this mod. Got it working within the first 30 minutes. My stupid self redid the solder and accidently pulled passenger side soldering point off. I tried to retrace the board but no luck. So now the radio only plays on driver side. I have a new radio tuner replacement on the way. I got a lot of practice on the old board. Hopefully I won't mess up the new one.

You don't have to go through all that. Did you use the same soldering points on the board as indicated in this pix?
On your pix looks like one off the channels is connected to a different spot on the board.

Just use C,D and E...if you dont want to use E, ground it to the chassis

u can do the revers side if you want to trace the board but the pictured way is the easiest. ...there are multiple points

It gives you an Aux input.

When a signal is sensed, it cuts off the radio and will play whatever is being sent into it. Most of us are just using the earphone jack and playing music from any phone.

So fm radio will still work normally until you start playing something through the aux line in?? Any ghosting or overlap of signals? Is fm cut completely off when there is an aux signal?

That works too. Sound quality can't compare to how rich and clear it is with this tuner mod. Surpasses cd quality. Perfectly tuned sound system. The signal comes through so clean I had to turn down my settings to all minimum on my JL amp.

I posted this in another thread but here it is again.

I did this mod last week. Quite simple and works well. I ran my cable from the rear of the car to the front by going up into the head lining. If you pull the door rubbers down to expose the edge of the head lining you can poke the cable into the gap and push the rubber back into place. The gap between the head lining and the 'B' Pillar is big enough to push the cable into and then continue with the front door rubber. Run it right down the rubber until it meets the plastic in the footwell. It took me 5 mins to get the cable from the back to the front and you obviously cant see it. You just need to direct it where you want it from there.

After many unsuccesful attempts to get decent sound (Tunelink, FM transmitter, etc etc) I decised to tackle the tuner mod.

One hour and 20 bucks later (plus 12 dollars for a fine tip soldering iron) I have true HD sound as good or better than CD.

For those on the fence about this mod, DO IT. So easy and cheap. There are plenty of good DIY's with pics etc. All you need is a 3.5mm aux cable which I got for 25 bucks (20ft) at Radio Shack, and a fine tip soldering iron. As stated above, it took me about an hour start to finish and that included running the cable up to the front of the vehicle via the door sills.

I could not believe the sound quality - no hissing, no static, no noise whatsoever. As soon as you plug your phone, ipod, or any other device, the radio switches to your source, REGARDLESS of whether you're on FM, AM and any channel. When you unplug, the radio is back on. Amazing. Wish I had done this long before now.

http://www.bimmerfest.com/forums/showthread.php?t=647631

Props to DriftGirl.

It really was such an easy job, I'm kicking myself for not having done it before. It takes me longer to do an oil change.

If anyone lives in the Greater Vancouver area, I'd be happy to help them with this mod.

Just to reinforce the key points in this mod:

It does not require a switch. The ipod, iphone or any other device will overide the tuner's sound as soon as you plug it into the headphone port on your device. There is no ghosting. Pure, clean sound.

It does not matter what freq you are on..... AM or FM.

Only three wires get soldered to the board - at points C, D and E in the pic. E is the ground. C and D can be connected to either of the other two wires on the cable.

The cable can be run along the ceiling trim or the door sills. I chose the latter and it took about 10 mins.

You will need about 16 ft of cable. Mine was 20 feet (thats all they had at Radio Shack).

A nice pointy soldering iron is a must. The points on the board are pretty large and easy to solder to. Just go easy on the solder - very little needed.

Best mod I've done so far! Props to you Driftgirl!

For the record, I ran my cable down the door sills and then up and under the dash and along the console to my phone mount, which took about 10 mins.

My car is an 03 as well. We should have the same tuner. I pm'd you the correct soldering points. It the one from AntonioStarr's post/thread. The one that has the pic of the circuitboard with the a,b,c,d,e soldering points on it. You only use points c,d, and e.

You're welcome. Kudos to the other members here who have contributed so much info on this mod.

As for the wires......I ran my cable down along the door sills tucked under them. You can pull up the sills and they just pop out and back in if you need to. Then when I got to the dashboard area, I ran it under the dash (the cover unscrews with 3 or 4 phillips). THEN along the console tucked underneath the carpet. It took me all of 10 minutes. Super simple and you do not see the cord at all, except where it comes out by the Idrive knob.

DCCXLV-Li
06-04-2013, 08:03 PM
Just to piggyback on RoadFrog comment about the console, you don't have to completely take the philip screws out, just loosen them enough to separate the lip and put the cable in, just enough to close the lip.

Lovin the Sound, and keeping the same look:thumbup:

Gave this a shot last night and almost gave up when we realized the circuit board for the logic 7 was not the same that was posted on the thread. After deciding to give a shot and go for it, it came out great! Only issue i have now is the aux port on my phone is either damaged or will not work with the cable i purchased. I used my buddies iphone and i touch and it worked great.

BTW For those that have done this, did you leave the 2nd cover off of the board once the cable was soldered on? Not the MAIN cover but the little one that was removed to find the 3 points....

I put the little cover back on. My wires were able to fit between the gaps easily. As for the board, my system is Logic 7 and was identical to the one on the thread (the hi res one with the ABCDE solder points).

roadfrog

My next project is to make the whole thing tidier. I'm looking into installing a 3.5mm port into the console that will hide all the wire. Then when I want to hook up the ipod or iphone, I just plug into it with a short cable. Also looking onto the Spec Dock which is even slicker and incorporates a Lightening connector for the iphone 5 and the aux jack. No wires ever showing. Like this:

Joined the ranks and did the tuner mod. it was pretty easy. Still get some feedback from the fm radio. I guess this is normal that I found on some threads? I find myself putting on a blank channel that just gets static for the best all around sound. It still sounds awesome but not 100% clean like i guess some people. What is everyone else doing? Also I cannot use my galaxy s4 with my current setup. But my wifes moto droid razr works perfectly. Strange.

Yeah, I dunno either. Certainly none on mine. The only noise I get is if I'm charging my phone at the same time as I'm playing tunes....and even THEN, not always. It's a hiss sound, which apparently is common in all Iphone 5 that get plugged into auxilliary jacks while charging.

I tune to a non-existant channel in the AM or FM band, and there is no other sound at all...just crisp, clear music.

That is what we are talking about. It's there with my moto droid razr, so its not an iphone thing. There is feedback...some people aren't audiophiles and don't really hear it while others (like me) hear it. But as Paper said everybody has it, but some worse then others.

so its not an iphone thing. There is feedback

Well I do know it's an issue with the Iphone 5 and the lightening cable. The Mac forums are full of stories about it. It's not unique to to the tuner mod....apparently it is an issue with all aux inputs in factory applications in other vehicles as well. Again, it only does it ocassionally, and only if it's charging with the lightening cable. the noise is similar to the hiss we used to get in casette decks back in the day. Apparently a ground loop isolator will cure the issue.

It disappears when your music source takes over (iphone, ipod, etc). If you prefer, change to a frequency that has no station assigned to it. Then you'll only hear static, until your source takes over. You should not hear any static or ghosting when paused, or between tracks etc. If you do, you've done something wrong.

You mean the iPhone gateway?

Maybe this only works on a facelift model?

No just the isimple if u can locate your factory antenna wire u can use the isimple they even make a Bluetooth isimple now so if your antenna wire is in the trunk you can still hook it up

Finally did the mod today and yaaaay it works....

But when I lower the volume, I hear that FM also playing parallelly  but no hissing...

When I increase volume on phone I don't hear that much but still not satisfied with FM playing in parallel

Any idea what could have gone wrong?

I had the same issue when I did this mod. You may want to try a Portable Headphone Amplifier. This is the one I found and it works great no more radio station bleed thru.

You will see three.. Blk is ground.. The other two colors will be for right & left channels.

With the aux wire I used the ground was just a bare wire ... The left and right were white and red. For those doing this mode make sure you wrap any exposed wire after you have soldered it on with some electrical tape. When I first did the mod, I had a little bare wire on both the right and left channel that were touching the board which made my radio sound horrible and gave me feedback when I connect my aux device. After covering any exposed wire with electrical tape .. All is well and there is little to no feedback through the radio when using the auxillary input.

There seems to be some slight difference but the soldering points are in the same general area. what I did was just manually checked by holding the wiring on the soldering point with my hand and tested it in the car.

So just connect your sound device to you auxillary cable and ground the wire on the shell of the tuner then place the right of left channel on what you believe should be the soldering point and listen for sound. Once you know you have correctly identified the soldering points then finish the job

RadioShack AUX cable works great. Male/female extension 16'. Cut the female end off and strip the wires to solder onto the correct points.

I don't get it... $100k car, you're saving $100s by doing this mod, but you can't afford to go buy a decent, gold plated, insulated monster 3.5mm cable? I've worked with audio for years and am amazed how people relegate audio cabling to the cheapest they can get. To everyone doing this mod, do yourself and your audio quality a huge favor and buy a good quality cable to cut 1 end off. Low oxygen, silicone cable etc. will set you back around $40-$50. These stories of people using mouse cables and cut-off headphone wires (unless they were $300 headphones!) make me shudder with disbelief...:banghead:

GREAT MOD! Dont ruin it by using rubbish cable.

Hey, just got around to starting this mod......I removed the HPS cap and took out the screw. Now I am pulling the panel and I want to make sure I don't break it but its not that easy to pop off. I heard the clip closest to me pop out but the rest are not budging. Am I missing something??? How should I pull the rest of the panel off?

Silly question, is this on the drivers side rear or passenger side?

My next project, I am going to modify the board to accept a Bluetooth module......

KevvyGP

I've integrated a bluetooth module into my car as well, along with USB chargers and an Android Media Centre. You will need a switch (more than likely) to cut the BT's permanent signal to the radio though, otherwise you will have no Radio. That, or a switch to simply turn the BT on and off. I integrated mine into the centre console and dremeled out the entire ashtry to install the android touch screen system which runs through teh Bluetooth, thus completely freeing up the jack and allowing me to play music from anything with a jack or bluetooth. And charge it at the same time :)

OK so it seems if you don't put up pics or videos, your "claims" are considered false. Ah well. For what it's worth, here is a video showing my Tuner mod using Bluetooth, Android as a media centre, mounted USB chargers and other goodness.

I hope you get some ideas from this, I'm loving my "Ultimate" tuner mod... or whatever you want to call it :p

This is an additional video showing the intricacies of app launching when using Android to make it work seamlessly. I optimised it to be about half this time after filming.

I wasn't saying your claims were false , I simply wanted to check out your install
of your Ultimate tuner Mod . I must say it does look good & is interesting . 1 question
you mention something about the toggle switch is for clearer sound . What exactly is
the toggle switch hooked up to that makes it clearer ???

KevvyGP
09-29-2014, 08:32 AM
Yeah I watched the video and realized that's not accurate really! Not so much for clearer sound it's to manually control input to the tuner from the BT. sometimes most BT devices put out a small signal even when not playing, which cuts out the radio while you may want to listen to it. This is a double throw toggle on the +/- inputs of the audio signal so it kills all audio from the BT. So to your point, it wouldn't make it clearer it just controls it explicitly. I did find that the impedance output of various BT modules is important to ensure all radio output is shut off, and this one did best out of the 3 or so I tried. Ipods seem to cut it out best, as in 100% so I may one day change this setup with an ipod touch, but I hate iTunes, and apple in general :-) another idea is to get a line cleaner or booster and unstall it post-switch to the tuner input. Would be easy to test first externally from BT to my 3.5mm input first which is nice. But overall, I have around 2% radio leak which is hardly ever noticeable.

I also did the mod today was easy to complete just taking the piller panel off was easy but just need to watch out comes apart in two pieces. But mine was completed and grounded the wire to the screw that holds the tuner. I have no static and no feedback but did get alittle crazy moment where it only played from one side but was only my cord had a short in it and after a quick change over it worked. perfect

Sorry for such a late reply , I lost track of our convo on your install ...

Ah ok I understand what you meant now . Your install looks good ,
& is definitely an interesting mod . You should make your own topic
& maybe put some more details in it for the other E65 E66 owners
that might want to try the same . I'll even sticky it if you like ???
Glad you got it all set up the way you wanted . I do have another
question if you don't mind ? I was just wondering if you plan on
doing any video upgrades , As in the MMI displaying whats on the
screen from the phone you have mounted in your ash tray ?

If you do , Maybe I can help as I just finished an install which has
wireless video playing with the help of a Push2TV unit .
