: X5 4.8 vrs. Porsche Cayenne S

I'm in the market for a new car, right now looking at the 4.8 X5 and the Cayenne S, which one would you guys recommend? Pros & Cons. Both going for about the same price.

I drive a Limited Grand Cherokee (2000) which is in very good shape but I would consider buying a new car if I can sell the old one well.
I don't do much off-road driving or on bad roads, mainly just going from home to office but since I suffer from back problems the best cars for me are SUV's. I like to feel a powerfull engine and a luxurious interior.

If you've got back problems, the seats would be the #1 priority. Sit in both, and see which feels better.

Personally, I like the X5 4.8 over the Cayenne because the Porsche is really just a VW with Porsche body (and in that case, get the Touareg V10 Diesel over the Cayenne V8).

But, with a bad back... sit in both.

While you're sitting in them, try to find an X5 with luxury seats. They offer more planes of adjustments than most seats and are simply awesome, in my opinion. Also, in my eyes X5 4.8is is a a bit of a "special" SUV, while Cayenne S is just a "regular" one. 4.8 is probably going to be more exclusive as well, if that's a factor.

If you're buying soon, you'll be able to order glass roof on the X5s. I think it's a pretty cool option to have. On Cayennes it won't be available until '05, from what I understand. Cayenne does offer bigger trunk, though, and is significantly more capable off-road.

Although it is very fast, and carries the prestiguous Porsche emblem, I'd take the X5 over it. The Porsche Cayenne is just ugly to me, but that's my opinion.

Having recently test driven a Cayenne S and an X5 (father's daily driver), I would have to choose the Porsche. I know of Porsche dealers within large Metropolitan areas that are knocking off up to $6K plus on 2004 Cayenne S models in stock.

Buy the Cayenne. I sold my Harley pickup truck to buy my wife an SUV. She had her heart set on an X5. Drove it and hated it - and she couldn't live without I-Drive. She instead picked the 04 BMW 5 series . So how did I get Cayenne out of this? There was a Cayenne on the same lot. If you enjoy driving it is like night and day. So we bought both. People on this post obviously have not driven a Cayenne. Anyone who says its the same as a VW is really clueless - too much article reading. I have not enjoyed a vehicle this much since my 850ci.

If you are planning to buy your vehicle anytime soon, I would recommend the Porsche, for the simple fact that I was in my BMW dealership today and they had a brand new 4.8is with an $8000 mark up simple becasue of the demand. They also sold one two weeks ago to a guy in Idaho for $98,000. So you can get a much better deal on the Porsche. But just to let you know I have raced a Porsche in my 4.6is with the Dinan S-2 package and kicked his ass. So if your looking for speed and the exclusivity of knowing that you wont see another vehicle like yours on the road (remember BMW only made 500 X5 4.6is for the entire US vs. Porsche Cayenne S's that you see a dozen of everyday) go for the BMW. If you want to save a couple of bucks and still get a really nice ride go after the porsche.

I love my 4.4,but i love the 4.8 more.I do know they're having engine problems.I'm not sure if the're is a recall.A friend of mine received the first one delivered on the west coast.It died on him after a few days.Nobody could find the problem.BMW flew in 2 engineers from Germany,they also could't fix it.They promptly replaced it with a 4.4.He still hasn't heard from them.The big V12's are having the same problems.I'de wait to see what happens before you invest in that awesome 4.8.Good luck.

Porsche doesn't have routine maintenance in their pricing. While getting my '03 911 worked on one morning, I heard the service advisor tell a lady that an oil change for the pepper was $240. That is outrageous, and the reason I change my own oil in the 911. Porsche service is VERY expensive. It is also why we just bought another X5.
