View Full Version : A concern about radar detectors...

So, for a while I've been considering buying a Valentine 1. Only one thing has been stopping me, and that's the question of whether it'll provoke cops into giving me tickets for things that they would otherwise ignore, or perhaps only give a warning for.

For example, take what happened to me the other day. It was around 2:00 PM in the afternoon, on a clear day. I was driving through the deserted back roads a few towns over from my house, doing about 50 in a 35. There were no cars ahead of me or behind me. I came over a hill, and then spotted a cop idling on the shoulder in my lane a few hundred feet away, radar pointed directly at me. I hit the brakes and slowed to 35, and as I approached the cop he stuck his arm out the window and gave me a "slow down" signal. I flashed my high beams in acknowledgement and continued on my way, slightly unnerved.

Now, I can't help but wonder if the cop would've been as forgiving had he seen a radar detector mounted on my windshield. It would seem to me that, while a radar detector decreases the chances that you'll get stopped for speeding, it increases the chances that you'll get a ticket instead of a warning if you are, as well as the chances of getting ticketed for minor infractions like doing a rolling stop at a stop sign.

What do you guys think?

Ergo, StealthOne. My V1 is hidden in the headliner and is COMPLETELY invisible. :) Also, the visor clip makes the V1 about one tenth as visible as the stupid suction cups.

Can you show me a pic of how you have your V1 set up?

I haven't found that there makes any difference. Also when you use a radar detector you stay aware of when it will do no good to you whatsever (like the case that started the thread). Keep it as well hidden as you can. The LEO most likely won't be looking for it anyway. I've gotten out of a few with one mounted right on the dash and a few I've gotten and thought I probably wouldn't have gotten if I didn't have it. I'm not going to ask the LEO or not so I'm not sure. Here's a pic of how I have mine mounted (not my car, but this pic was from the website on directions on how to hardwire one in a 540).

Uh, not really. But if you look at any interior shots of any stock M3 with a Cinnamon interior, you'll see EXACTLY what you see in my car.

And I mean exactly.

You can't see it. It's, you know...invisible.

How does the V1 'see,' then?

If somehow Valentine could come out with a fully hidden mount with remote sensors, it would be perfect (heck, I might get one).

The radar will still penetrate the headliner. The laser detector won't work, though. Might not be a big deal in some areas, but it has saved my butt a couple times.

That's irrelevant to me.

The go with the Escort SRX or V1/Lidatek setup.

The Escort SRX is what I have. Escort 8500 electronics, remote mounted sensors (front and rear), SMALL interior control head, when you don't really have to see, but mine is in the cubby above the ashtray, I may move it to the actual ashtray. And it has built in laser jamm... I mean laser SHIFTING. :) And it does work.

Nothig for the police to see, and protects against laser.

V1/Lidatek is similar.
