I went to the dealer today to buy the extended maintenace on my '02 330i. I inquired about an extended warranty as well, and while they offered a 3rd party warranty, they also offered me a 6 year/100K warranty via the CPO route.

They claim its just like the factory warranty, but it has a $50 deductable.

Any thoughts? My car is just a hair under 36K miles and just over 2 years old, so I'll probably get close to 100K miles in 6 years. The car has been terrific so far, and I'm not worried about it falling apart, but I'm concerned that as I get into the 75K-100K range, there's going to be a couple of items that cost $$$.

The fly in the ointment is that even though its under warranty, it still has to be inspected to be accepted under CPO, and the tires/brake "limits" are different for CPO than they are for the maintenance. In otherwords, CPO will require 80% useful brake life, but maintenance won't cover that because it has to get to 0% brake life. Now, I just put new tires on and new rear brakes were put on last month, so if I'm going to do it, this is probably the best time in terms of out-of-pocket expense.

According to this thread (http://www.bimmerfest.com/forums/showthread.php?t=58673&highlight=CPO+Warranty) it is "illegal" for dealer to CPO your car. BMW only allows used cars that are to be resold to be CPO'd.

If you do buy a 3rd party extended warrandy make sure you buy from a solid company. Gold Warranty used to sell for many years and was even a sponsor on this board until they went belly up last year and lot of people were left holding the bag.

GEICO used to sell Mechanical Breakdown Insurance and Entended Warranties to their policiy holders. I am not sure if they do anymore.:dunno:

Right...

I always thought CPOed cars are offered by carmakers to help dealers move their trade-ins and off lease cars.

I don't know about the CPO part but if you plan on keeping the car I would consider the extended warrantee. After my '99 328i was past the warrantee period I spent close to $4K in repairs.

Talk to Ted in the Dealer's section. He has great deals on the extended service program BMW began to offer this year on selected recent models.

Yes, go to the "ask a dealer" section here and pose a question to Ted. He knows all! And you can read his replies to other questions posed to him. A great area of bimmerfest!

The CPO warranty is *NOT* like the factory warranty. CPO does not cover a lot of things.. radio, nav, most dash and HVAC components, etc. It's mostly drivetrain...

Where does it say that most dash and HVAC components are not covered... :dunno:

Sounds pretty good for an extended warranty, except the clutch and suspension parts and components not being covered.

Wear and Tear
All wear and tear items as defined in The Certified Pre-Owned BMW Protection Plan Consumer Information Statement (including all suspension parts and components).
