I cannot get over how freeking loud the wind deflector on the sunroof is. I'm talking about the mesh screen that is attached to the factory windscreen that pops up when you open the roof all the way. It is so loud you can't use the sunroof over 40mph. And it's not just my car- I asked 2 friends with 2012 750IL's and they said the same thing- they can't use the sunroof because it sounds ridiculous. If you reach up and manually pull the deflector down the noise disappears. Anyone else experience this, or had it fixed??
It lowers because of programming - once you slow down from a high speed it doesn't pop back up until you hit +/-55mph.
That's a brilliant thought - when I get my car out of the shop I will look at the parameters in the sunroof module and see if anything can be changed regarding diffuser height.
What is the effect with the shield up? Does it reduce drag and turbulence for backseat pax? A safety device. There has to be a reason for it to be there.
The thing is that it's a diffuser and not a deflector. I had a deflector in my last 7, and it was much quieter. Not sure about the back passengers, because they're not allowed to complain, but the front compartment doesn't experience any less turbulence in my F01 than it did from the sunroof in my E65. Sometimes I just keep the sunroof open around 70% so that the diffuser doesn't engage. That damn thing is loud enough to drive a sane man over the edge. Maybe those Germans added it in to cover the noise of that garbage stereo they sold us for an extra $1800.
Learn something every day! What's the difference between a diffuser and a deflector? The former is mesh and allows [some] air (sound) to pass, while the latter is solid and completely redirects? If so, thoughts on why they opted for a diffuser this time around?
The problem lies with the mesh- I'm thinking of cutting it out to see if it improves the sound. I can't believe you can buy a $100,000 car that has a useless sunroof....
I'd think the deflector (was a solid black piece of metal in my E65) would be designed to carry the wind stream over the roof opening, but maybe they found that it was just directing it into the face of rear passengers. The diffuser is meant to just break the wind up - sort of like those rear wind screens that some convertibles have. I had some type of chevrolet as a rental car a while ago (i think it was an impala), and it had some loud diffuser also. I wouldn't imagine BMW would use them because they're cheaper than a piece of solid metal, but who knows with these guys.
I dont think its any more noisy than when you pull it down as far as actual loudness, with it up its just a bit higher sound as far as pitch so easier to hear but even with it down its still just as loud to me lol.
I thought you guys were nuts for talking about how the diffuser drops at certain speeds etc. There's no way! But then, when I left the sunroof open when I shut off the car, it lowered! Couldn't figure out what that noise was. Shut if off a few times and actually saw it drop down.
Thanks! I just got it last month as a Christmas present to myself It is a monster, frankly it gets hairy. At 55mph the rear will slide out if I floor it, you need to really ease into it. And OE makes a tune that bumps it to 660hp and 719lbs lol. I'm not used to the attention though- people are starting to stop next to me and take pictures- I even has a C300 guy frantically wave at me like I was his long lost brother. You really do feel different when driving the car, it's amazing...
I still can't get over how loud the roof is in the 7, it's virtually unusable over 40...
The visor on our 7s lowers once you blow past 80mph with the roof open. Been meaning to look into the coding to see if that 80mph is a hex setting that can be changed. If so, I'll post the code and we'll set that thing to 5mph to put it to sleep for good.
