Just got 2004 4.4...awesome machine.. much different than my e39, but awesome, nonetheles..
In the 24 hours I've had it, I have a couple questions, for you experts (I will post this on another board, as well, for more complete answers):
1. Foglights go off when car goes off, or lights go off.. can I program them to stay on when lights are on.. so i don't have to hit the switch each and every time the lights go on?
2. does anyone have mud flaps, and if so, do you have pictures? do you think it rounds the car out? finishes it, so to speak?
3. anything recommended for assisting with the height in getting into the back seats for my kids? they keep stepping on the plastic rather than the mats, to get in, and don't want to scuff it up..
thanks.

I'm sorry I can't help you with #s 2 or 3 and I wouldn't help you with # 1.I doubt there is fog around every time you turn your headlights on thats why it"s on a separate switch.Enjoy the  car!

while they are called "fog lights", they do provide additional lighting for the shorter view. this doesn't affect ANY oncoming traffic, and as long as it does not, the more lighting, the safer.
and as far as it being on a seperate switch, might just be by design, since my E39 has a seperate switch which REMAINS on ALL the time! I was asking, since perhaps the memory key can be programmed.

Fogs on the X5 are logic controlled, not a "hard switch" as on the E39.

LOL. OK.. what's the logic behind not coming on when the lights come on, if I have the switch set that way (If they allowed it).. is there an overrride, or way to change it?

I had mud flaps installed at the dealership a few months ago and think that they work great. You don't really notice how big they are, but they work nicely. I'll look for some photos and try to post them for you. Enjoy your 4.4!

The logic is that you are only supposed to use fog light when there is fog. Fog light do affect incoming traffice because they are design to spread light, not focus and aiming a specific point.
I head in Europe, you will get a ticket if you use fog light when there is no fog, so go figure.

I am thinking about buying my neighbors 2004 4.4 X5. It has 3,400 miles on it. Fully loaded, except navigation. If you don't mind, how much did you pay? He said he would give me a great dael of 45K for it. Is it a good deal? How do u like the car?

depending on the equipment on your neighbors car, it sounds like a steal, actually. Mine listed out for $59,960, and I got it for DEAD cost, somewhere in the $54,000 range...leased it, so don't have the papers in front of me.
I have prem/spt/rear climate, prem. radio, and upgrade 19" rims.. used would be $50k or so, depending on the mileage... $45k for your neighbors seems just awesome, if the car is perfect, with that low of mileage.
Drive it first. Great vehicle, but if it has sports pkg, it will be a little firm... good luck.
I like it, have to get more used to it.

Read my other reply to your post. It's a very good deal, especially for all those options. If it really does have every option except for navi, it's a steal. I'd buy it for that price!!!
Every One has the right to their opinion; but it an extremely common complaint for x5 (almost every X5 board has this asked on a weekly basis!). Most other bmw cars have on/off switch for fogs that stays on. There is apparently a not so easy way to do what you want. check out http://www.x5world.net for more details.

Yes, it is true that in Europe you get a ticket when using fog lights and there is no fog.
In some EU countries, they are starting to introduce "day lights". They look like fog light but brighter and hot wired to your ignition. When switching on your main lights, the days turn off and visa versa. The law has already been introduced in Austria that your lights have to be on during the day. Germany has started now. I think is a good thing. Vehciles are realy more visible during the day.
