Why is Mexico of all places getting the 1 series, while us here in the US do not? I was just looking at Mexico's BMW site and they have info on it. At ours we do not, and obviously we are not getting the 1 series bimmer for quite a while. Can anybody answer this question as to why in the world MEXICO gets it but not us?
Thanks,
Alex

Alex Small cars sell in Mexico.
Check out VW Mexico site and you will find the VW Polo, a car smaller that the Golf, on the GM Mexico site you will find the Chevrolet Chevy, a car based on the Opel Corsa, on the Ford Mexico site you will find a Ford Fiesta, etc.
Even the new generation Ford Contour (aka Mondeo) is sold in Mexico.

Yeah. I went to Mexico, not knowing much at the time about the international car scene, and I was totally taken by surprise. I saw many Polos and a small handful of Chevy's and couldn't help but love one and laugh at the other.

Mexico's car market is more like Europe's, with a focus on "small". The 1 series fits that market - despite its premium pricing - but, with the best will in the world, has no place in the US.

USA is not a good market for small cars like polo, corsa, fiesta, 1-er, etc.
I don-t whats up with mexiko, but as you guys say, probably the market is similar to Europe.
But who wants can buy a 1-er there, and bring it to the US, but i don-t know the terms on how it goes, here if i would buy a car in Germany or Austria, and i wanted to bring it to Hungary, i must pay tax, on a new car, and a registration amount on X euros, but even like this, the 5-er, 7-er are cheaper to buy in Germany than in Hungary. :thumbdwn:

Well yes, our market is much like the european one becouse:
1)Cities are crowded, specially Mexico City.
2)Gas prices are high (US$2.50/gal)
3)Taxes on new cars are very high.
4)Prices on new cars are very high too.
So this is why small cars like the chevy, polo, fiesta, yaris, hyundais and most recently SEATs, are very popular.
We get many premium hatches here becouse it provides an even lower entry level to premium brands like Mercedes' CL200k sports coupe or even the A class, Audi's A3, Alfa Romeo's 147. Until now the cheaper BMW was a stripped 320i wich goes for about US$37,000, so the 1series will provide them with a lower priced entry to compete with the other brans.
Hope this helps make things more clear.

Oh, give me a break. That's not high! Try $6.50 a gallon, then come back to me.

Well excuse me if $2.50 a gallon is high to me :p . Thats why I used the word "like" and not "identical" ;) .
Any way maybe I thought I new much about european (English) car market by only reading CAR magazine. :dunno:

The 1er isn't listed on bmw.ca. I doubt they will be getting it in October if at all.
Canada is similar to the US but not the same. For example Canada gets the 320i and the US does not. There are differences in packages and options. Canada has a 330i M performance edition sedan instead of the US spec Performance Package. Similar but not quite the same.

Hey Ricardo, I have a few questions for you. How many BMW's do you see down there in Mexico? Curious because stereotypes of Mexico and it's economy are not good here. No offense to you or your country. I have a massive amount of respect for Mexico. Also, what do you do for a living in ciudad de mexico?
Thanks,
Alex
By the way, beautiful coche.

Hi Alex, non taken :) . There's actually quite a lot of them, and there are certain areas in the city where it's actually normal to see about 2 or 3 per block(3series, X5s, 5series etc.). The economy is bad but there's plenty of rich or very rich people around, I would concider my self in the "middle" middle class :p wich means my US$40,000, entry level, E46 320i is about as much as I can spend in a car.
As for what do I do for a living, we run (my family) a construction/engineering business. We kind of specialize on solimechanics and structural engineering but we also have some public contracts. We are currently fixing/rebuilding some irrigation channels up north for example, so we pretty much do what we can get our hands on  .
Thanks
Ricardo.

You would have a hard time registering the car since it is not certified to be EPA/DOT compliant.

Take advantage of NAFTA. Register it as a commercial truck in Mexico and pretend to haul stuff into the US.

You are making a Point.
Just consider this facts:
a) Mexico's population aproches 105M people
b) 50-60 % lives below the poverty line
c) The country GDP in 2004 was 640 US$bn.
So do the math...
That leaves space for a bunch of 10 to 15 M people in Mexico with a GDP per capita of about 21,000 USD
That explains the record sales of BMW, Porsche and Audi in Mexico in 2004. Not to mention the new Chevys, Nissans (the small ones), VW´s, and Chrysler minicars that are like a Biblical plague in Mexico City....
By the way. Do you know the tax (Tenencia) for my new 325iA Top Line (US46,500) that I had to pay? US 1,000 aprox. VAT is additional. Registry and License are additional. And its not a one time payment. Its a yearly payment!

Hi all. I was invited to a 120i demo drive at Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez here in Mexico City a few months ago. BMW had set up a course around the main oval with both high speed and handling sections. I drove a 120i with a stick.
The car is most definitely a BMW. It feels at least as agile as my 3 series. The chassis is beautifully balanced. Engine power is lacking a bit (especially at Mexico City's elevation above sea level) but otherwise I can tell you I wouldn't miss my 3.
I am waiting for the 130i which should show up here soon. I'd like to compare it back to back with the E90 3 series before I decide which way to go. The 130i supposedly can lap the Nurburgring only 20 to 25 seconds off the pace of an E46 M3. Wow!

Hi 328CiMex,
Are you here in Mexico D.F.? How long have you been posting here?
I have't had a chance to drive de 1 series but I hope I can make it to "La semana del automovil" this next weekend to try it out. I heard the 130i is coming here in early 2006 so that would be a long wait. As for the E90 I think it should be here in about 1 or 2 months but since I only like the Mtech (paquete F1 aqui en mexico) version I think that should take another six months at least.

I am here in D.F. I just started on this forum. I usually hang around (as 328Ci) in the Car and Driver forums at www.caranddriver.com
The 1 series is great. If you go next week to Centro Pegaso please take pictures and post them. I would love to go but will be in Veracruz with my in-laws.
I was told by my dealer (Imagen Motors) that the 130i should get here this year and that the E90 arrives in May. I think an F1 package will take a year or so, but we will see. If I decide on the 3, I'd probably wait for the coupe in 2006 because I like it a bit better.
Other option I'd love is an E46 M3. However it is insanely expensive here as you know. I have driven several M3s and they are so great...

How about Canada? Are they going to get the 1?
Apparently yes! The Eastern Canadian market is different to the US market as the price of fuel is that much higher than what you see in the US. Sub compact's have a big share of the market here in Quebec and it is bound to increase with the recent hike in the price of fuel. BTW also heard that the A3 will be coming to town and we have started seeing the Smart on the road.
I can't wait for BMW to bring the 330D into Canada!
