hey guys, I'm new here so I guess I'll introduce myself. My name is Warot, I'm 19 and right now I'm working at BMW South Africa for the summer. Ok let's be honest, some people here are probably going to look at me and say bs which is fine... I work at the Analysis and Test Center here in South Africa.
Ok about the one Series... I think you guys pretty much have got it covered. We have 2 of them here, a 120i and a 116i. And they look exactly like they do in some other threads, with black camouflage tape on. Both of them are blue and are right hand drive.
I've been working with these 2 cars for about 2 months them. I have to say that the general feeling is that this feels like a lower class BMW, which is pretty much what it was meant to do. So inside, there's a hell of a lot of plastic. All the silver linings and stuff... the whole dashboard is plastic, and the WORST part of the car has to be the glove box. Here's how I can prove that I'm not lying. I will tell you right now, that door for the box is like a damn lunch tray, or it's made of the same material. really light, really cheap. When someone here buys a 1 if you do, you can back me up on that one.
The dipstick part that someone mentioned earlier, that's true. On petrol engines, there isn't one and the sensors haven't failed here yet, quite useful actually. the IDrive of course is pretty fidly, but same as the 5. Back will be small for adults but ok for kids... trunk space is acceptable considering it's a compact car. I think that's all I have to say for now, but yea if you have questions I'll be glad to answer. But like Hoolio said, I refuse to post pictures because I just don't want to risk my future with BMW. Besides, there's more than enough on this thread.
so you're american (judging by your location)? how'd you land that job? pretty cool.

Huh? The 1 series has been released already: why do you still have ones with camouflage tape? And why are you worried about posting photos?
And who the hell is Hoolio?
Did someone lift this from another board or something?

hmm, ok, I don't know who the hack is but whatever, I'm not him.
I don't know where you are, but I am in South AFrica right now. The 1 Series isn't going to be released until October or so... which explains why the car is still camouflaged right now.
As for the job, it's quite simple actually. I'm a student at Virginia Tech, but my parents live in South Africa. And they happen to be friends with this director for plant Rosslyn... so through contact, I have this job now, which is not too bad at all, I have to admit.

This is so weird...the 1 series has be introduced all over the world, why is it still camouflaged in S Africa???
Also, whats your point on saying its glovebox compartment feels like plastic???
I have seen lots of photos of the 1 series and read lots of articles from reputable magazines.
None has mentioned cheap interior, on the contrary.
BTW dont ALL cars have plastic cokpit nowadays??
What is the point that you are trying to state?

no, there really was no point, but I just thought some people would like to hear about the 1 Series from this point of view.
Realize that everything works slower in South AFrica, or remote places. Freaken movies are released months after the US, hits from Christmas only come here right now and things like that. I can tell you for sure, 100 percent, that the 1 series is not yet released. Which is why it's camouflaged, simple enough yea?
I made one big mistake though I'll admit. The 120 and 116 that we have here are pre-series so the interior weren't going to be the final one. No crap interiors are made of plastics these days, but did you read what I said? I'm talking lunch trays plastic. Do you have any clue how cheap and pathetic that is? But like I said, that's a mistake because seven 120i just came in for the press today. The interior is MUCH better and are more to BMW standards. But the silver lining, that runs accross the dashboard, that is totally plastic. I'm not even talking e46 standard or anything like that... I'm saying it's comparable to kinds of plastics you find on earphones for example. That is no joke.
The other thing that some people were talking about in other threads concerned the IDrive. I can say that some cars will not have it, which might actually be a good thing. Instead, it will have a more standard dashboard... so you can change everything with a button... more like e46 if you know what I mean. So overall, I gained some more respect for the 1 Series. And trust me on this one, the 1 series in real life looks better, especially in light silver color.

Hi
Im in South Africa aswell
Why does BMW SA have a 116i? it wont be onsale here
Only the 120i and ten the 120d
Where are the cars Midrand or Rosslyn ??
Why do you only have 2 cars
The dealers have had a few show cars for the last 2 Months
Club Motors had a black and silver 120i last week
Northcliff auto had a white 120i
JSN had 3 black ones
Why are yours still covered? The Uncovered ones can bee seen driving in convouy almost everyday in Johannebsurg, just like they did with the E60 to show it off
Kan jy verstaan wat ek skryf ???
Is jy seker jy is van Suid Afrika ???
wat is twee plus twee ??

Also why do you have a "summer" job in a country where it is winter??
Warot

Yea, I know it's winter here right now, but I'm still thinking in US weather.
Anyway, don't ask me way the cars are still covered. The 120i has been running since April I believe. Right now, the two cars are serving as a custumer orientated test... which means the employees at BMW get to test drive the car and then see what they like and don't like... all that is sent to Germany, the info I mean. So the 116i is being tested as well.
I'm in Rosslyn by the way. BUt Thursday was my last day so that's it for now,.

I figured out what he was asking once I realized he was drunk. :D Just teasing! Some of my neighbors speak Plattdeutsch which cracks me up by making nonsense of my expectations.
