According to german news, there are already over 10.000 orders for the 1 Series. There were 60.000 test drives registered. From those who have test driven, 75% of them are driving other brands. (the highest was VW owners with 17%)

I've been reading that Golf V sales are 'less than spectacular' so far.

Would that be 3 series touring 'less than spectacular'? Or Z4 'less than spectacular'? Perhaps X3 'less than spectacular'?

:dunno: The Golf is the perrenial best-seller in this class in Europe. The new Astra, though, seems to be giving it a real run.

BTW I was just at your work picking up a couple of things. Sorry I didn't think of saying hi (assuming you're there today).

Golf sales have indeed been 'less than spectacular' in the last two years. Golf IV sales were almost down to half. E46 was the second best selling car in the german market.

I bet, BMW will steal more market share from Golf.

Looking from this side of the pond, it seems like in the past few years the French  have really made inroads in this market segment (especially the Megane). and the Astra's reputation seems to have markedly improved. And with the Golf inching upmarket ever more, it's leaving the large sales volumes behind.

That is a correct observation. Renault is the best selling import car in Germany and this since years. The new Astra is repeating the success history of Focus, which saved Ford's a-ss from going downhill.

Now VW is preparing a bunch of niche Golf models. But this niche car trend is not convincing me and in the long run, it'll do more harm than success, IMO. I think following a clearly defined model range is better for the marque than offering zillions of different body forms.

I forgot about the Focus. Successful enough to spawn a whole new platform that the American Focus doesn't get (we just get a major facelift). Ford needs to give up their 'world car' idea after 30 years of not following through, but that's another thread.

I don't think having a bunch of different models is necessarily bad (the Megane comes 6 ways) as long as there are markets for them. For example, if they don't do a notchback (i.e. Jetta/Bora nee Vento) there won't be near as big a market in the US. Makes more sense than doing up completely new models to fill certain niches.

Pretty safe bet, considering if BMW sells even one 1er, it will have successfully stolen market share from the Golf... :stickpoke :p

(BTW, is my signature pic close enough to the pixel limit, or would you prefer I follow the letter, in addition to the spirit, of the request?)

CAR magazine had a writeup between the two. The Golf V was very disappointing visually and made the 1er look good.

All three major French car manufacturers have really changed their ways in the '90s and this century, making their cars a lot more reliable, better performing and more visually appealing. I wish some of them would get imported here.

You can already. It's called "Nissan" ;)

More seriously - Renault has stated that they plan on getting on the US market in the coming years (most likely by leveraging the Nissan network). Peugeot is rumored to work on that as well. Columbo might finally be able to replace his old Peugeot 403 for a cool 307cc :D

"You can scoff, Lister, that's nothing new. They laughed at Galileo. They laughed at Edison. They laughed at Columbo."
"Who's Columbo?"
"The man with the dirty mac who discovered America."
