I'm hoping someone else has experienced this problem and can help me. There is a strange clicking noise coming from under my 1990 535i. It only appears when the car is up to normal operating temps and almost exclusively on very warm days. After I've been moving along at a reasonable speed and then stop, the clicking noise starts when I start moving again. The faster I go the faster the clicking becomes. The clicking happens in forward and reverse but isn't affected by engine RPM, I can slip the trans in nuetral and the clicking stays the same. All the systems, brakes, steering, trans, etc. seem to be operating normally. My wife drives this car and has mandated the problem be solved! Any ideas....I hope?

the same problem is happening to our x5... what turned out to be the problem? i suspect it's the battery.

I'm getting a similar sound - though temperature doesn't play a role whatsoever. The sound comes from around the bell housing of the transmission and is affected when the distance between the car chassis and the road changes, i.e., going over a pothole will make it sound louder. Its timing is tied to the speed of the car, not the RPMs.
Gonna have to lift the thing this weekend - almost sounds like there a bag or bundle of string or something wrapped around the driveline. :eeps:

I had the same problem, and it came from my drive shaft.

There you go, sounds related to road speed are driveline. From where I sit I'll guess hard click is probably a rear driveshaft.

There is a valve on the evap sys that clicks sometimes. Cant remember exactly where it is... Somewhere on the dvrs side firewall. I think repairng the mounts helps get rid of it.
