New tire, very little/no info or feedback yet. We most tires slightly about our cost, so if you ever see a special price on a tire, it is an indication we've acquired them at a lower cost than normal due to the volume of the purchase.

I was looking at these last night. Do they need to be shaved for dry conditions? I met some guy at the track this weekend and he had Yokohama A048s. It came in 6/32 thread depth and he said they did not need to be shaved for dry conditions. Looking at the UTPQ ratings, this dunlop tire seems quite similar to the A048. What does Dunlop recommend?

How much do you guys charge per tire if I want to heat cycle these Dunlops?

There is surprisingly little information on the internet about this tire. Here's a small description from European Car: http://www.europeancarweb.com/tech/0408ec_tire/index.html

I am quite tempted to get these with Kosei K1 Racing, but I am a little concerned with the lack of reviews on these tires out there. But then, at around $120 a tire, it ain't so bad to just try it out.

Here is what I've been able to dig up on the Dunlop SP Super Sport Race :

A blurb from Dunlop

---
On the outside, the SP Super Sport Race uses a tread compound developed from Dunlop's racing experience molded into a directional tread design inspired by Dunlop's wet race tire. It features large independent shoulder blocks flanking a low void center zone to enhance dry cornering traction, steering response and high-speed stability without neglecting wet traction.
---

and other info :

The SP Super Sport Race is molded with 6/32" of tread depth in its grooves and is available unshaved for use on damp tracks or shaved to between 3/32 to 4/32" of tread depth for use on dry tracks.

It is not recommended for driving on extremely wet roads where there is the risk of hydroplaning. This is especially true of shaved or worn tires. Drivers should drive cautiously at reduced speeds in these conditions.

The SP Super Sport Race currently includes the following sizes:

225/45R17
245/40R17

225/40R18
235/40R18

245/35R18
255/35R18
265/35R18

285/30R18

UTQG Ratings
Treadwear 60
Traction A
Temperature A

We charge $15 each to Heat Cycle and $15 each to shave.

Be sure to call me rather than order online if you'd like these services.

Dunlop Bring BTCC Performance to Track Day Driving

Dunlop dominate the world of touring car racing supplying tyres to the majority of national championships, including the highly competitive British Touring Car Championship.

Track day drivers can now experience the levels of grip that BTCC stars such as Yvan Muller, Matt Neal and James Thompson are accustomed to as Dunlop expand their range of motorsport bred road legal tyres, designed for the burgeoning track day market.

The Dunlop SP Super Sport Race has a striking similarity to the renowned Dunlop wet race tyre, trusted by the world’s leading touring car and Le Mans racers. Tony Gilhome, Product Manager for race car tyres explains: “The similarity is more than coincidental – the directional tread pattern is a direct descendant of the race tyre design, and the compound was developed with track use in mind.”

The Dunlop SP Super Sport Race has been proven to offer a vast improvement in dry weather performance over a conventional road tyre, but more importantly, has won plaudits for it’s damp track performance compared to other track orientated tyres.

Former British GT Champion Calum Lockie relies on Dunlop SP Super Sport race tyres when running his Porsche 968 Club Sport at track days. “When fitted with Dunlop SP Super Sport Race tyres the car felt more positive, confidence inspiring and had improved grip under braking.” claimed Calum, who currently also races a 630BHP Marcos on Dunlop tyres.

The Dunlop SP Super Sport Race is available in a wide range of 17”, 18” and 19” sizes.

I know this may sound silly, but for those of us who like to run 'R's on the street it's an issue. Are the Dunlops noisy like the Yoko 032s or reasonably quiet like the Kumho V700s?

We only have shaving facilities and stock of the Tire in South Bend. To contact me simply call the phone number in my signature.

Can these tires be flipped on the wheel to maximize thread life?

Because they are directional but not asymmetric, they can be remounted on the wheel with the fresh shoulder facing out. But they should be swapped to the other side of the vehicle so they are still rolling in the conventional direction. Dunlop has not indicated if they recommend having them roll 'backwards'.

I just ordered a set of these... I'll be using them for daily driving initially then when they've worn down I'll track them. At only $130/each, I simply had to order a set.

Gary, how long do you think they'll stay at these prices???

Makes sense.

Unfortunately I do not know how long they'll keep the price the same. If the price is changed it is normally done so at the first day of the new month. My guess is that they will stay at this price for awhile.

Glad to hear that... I'm waiting on a paycheck then I too will jump on these at the latter part of this month. I'll also make sure to give Bimmerfest the credit :)

I had a chance to try these tires out at WillowSprings yesterday. The temps were in the upper 60's so it was cool but sunny at the same time. Not sure what the track temp was but these tires are awesome. I can't make a direct comparison to other Rcomps since I'd been tracking my car on street tires for the past several events.

I got to push my car further than I ever have before at this track (which led me to fuel starvation with just a hair under a half tank!) These tires are great in my opinion.

Gary, how much longer do you 'guess' that they'll be at these awesome prices? :dunno:

Can these tires be used for eveyday driving along with weekend track events? They are half the price of my Michelin so I wouldn't mind changing them twice as often for twice the grip. :dunno:

These are not meant for everyday driving, unless your everyday driving is to the track, on the track, and back home :p .

I really have no idea about how long the prices will be this low, no predictions here, sorry!

For the price, I hear they're a great value.

I'm told they heat up pretty fast and don't cool down quickly, though. (These were unshaven.)

The real question is how much will they actually cost? I'd buy zillions of them at this price, but have no particular desire for them if they cost $250 or more.

I put them on a week before going to WillowSprings and drove them every day going to and from work. It reminded me of when I was running my previous set of Rcomps on the street. Then again, I live is Sunny SoCal and it's never rained when I've had this type of tire on the car. I did notice that they tend to get a bit loud if the temps drop below 60. :dunno:

I think I may even order another set just to have them!

Another apples to watermelon comparision.

i.e., These are the greatest XXX that ever was. Of course I have never used, seen or tried any other brand, type or variation of XXX, but these are the best.

:)

Any R-comp is going to be great compared to just about any street tire.

I can't speculate as to how these compared with my previous set of Rcomps because of several factors, primarily time. I haven't been on Rcomps in at least six months plus I'd never been on Rcomps at WillowSprings. Regardless, having Rcomps at prices less than 'average' street tires is by far a good deal and 'great'. Comparitively, apples to watermelon or even fruit salad for that matter, I'd say they're a great deal. :D

Short of a time trial, I can't, as of now, say which one (R1R vs SP Race) is faster.

Then just say that. Yes, cheap R-comps are good, but you can only compare them to what you have actually experienced.

And it wasn't just you, an accumulation of many posts that finally set me off. :)
