Was thinking about lowering my car to get it back down to spec. Was thinking about doing just the springs. However the guy told me that they wouldn't work to the full potential w/ the stock shocks. He said that doing the whole thing all around would run about 2 or 3 grand. This is insane... so much for that idea.

Can you do the work? If so, it should be WAY less than that. Even with a shop doing the work that is a bit high.
Yes, with lowering springs is it best to replace the shocks, and depending on the number of miles on the car, shocks may be needed anyway.
For the parts check:

www.tckline.com
www.tirerack.com
www.shox.com
Parts (springs and shocks) will be a good bit less than $1000.
