Just a thought: how close does the transponder module have to be to start the car?

I taped it just above the keyhole surround and the car starts.

With a dab of velcro, you could have another wallet-friendly emergency key, though admittedly a two piece one.

I was under the impression that the Coupe's main key was a costly item that you would have to special order from the motherland's factory?
I also assumed you can't have it cut so is this the solution for making an emergency spare?
Thanks

The un-lit master key retails for $29.50 which you have to order through a BMW dealer.
I removed the plastic handle and had my machinist replace it with a metal one so that I could have a metal wallet key. The plastic wallet key felt like it was going to break when opening the trunk on my coupe.

Thanks Ron. For some odd reason I thought the key ran ~$100.
Good to know.

Isn't it the LIT key that runs around $60-80? I bought the OEM key (LIT with that really bad orange light) for around the above mentioned price...

For what car? For my '01 M coupe the lit key was $38.25 retail for the part number shown in post #1.
I purchased both from Paul at South Motors BMW 09/21/2004.
