For what it's worth, the latest Roundel says BMW confirmed a 300 hp M1 in coupe and convertible form, and is considering a hatch version.

Don't worry. We won't get it in the US.

nah, I bet we'll get it--SMG only
:D
Then it'll be no different than if we were to not get it at all.

are you saying Nick doesn't drive an M3?
They seemed to be making more fun at the looks than talking about the performance. They also mentioned somewhere, or quoted someone from BMWNA saying that we won't get any hatchback so it would be more likely an M2 which I think most of us already assumed we would get eventually. Didn't they say something like 7 new M cars over the next few years.

I would not buy an SMG E46 M3. It might as well not exist as far as I'm concerned. The same goes for an SMG M1.

I don't put that much stock in this sort of stuff coming out of Roundel anymore. It seems to be about as accurate as Autolies.

Yep--maybe even less accurate than that. I hope they atleast refrain from using that completely fugly front/rear bumper that we've seen on the prototype "sport edition" 1 series hatch. I wonder if there's a snowballs chance in hell that the coupe will look atleast half as good as the artists renderings in automobile magazine a while back. Probably not.

I'm sure the US would get a 2 door M1 or convertible M1, just no hatchbacks.

sign me up if no i-drive and offered with a manual  probably the only new gen bmw that I look forward too.
i would think that they would reserve the "M1" for some sort or supercar since there was once an M1 "supercar". Maybe they should use M Compact instead.

I genuinely suspect all future M cars will be SMG only.

Question, why do you guys hate SMG so much? Just out of curiosity
can't speak for other ppl, but i don't hate SMG. i just happen to prefer a shifting gears myself.
anyway, that's not the point - why not offer both??

I think the 400+ hp M cars will be SMG - to keep idiot drivers from killing themselves. I don't think the M1 will be SMG only though, not this gen anyway.

I'll take an SMG M1 hatch. That sounds like an excellent daily driver in my book.

I dont really think they will make SMG standard in a $35k car. At least that's what I'd pay for one, no more than 38k
Also I don't know where would they put the S54 Z M on the market if they really are serious about the 300hp 1-series M. I think the logical (and ideal) solution is a 250hp 1-series (M or not) and a 333hp Z M

I think the M1 will come in 2007, so the S54 will be gone by then.
The regular 1 series coupe will have the 250 hp 3.0L - so the M will have to have 300 hp.

I didn't say an S54 M1, but an S54 Z M. I've been hearing lots of rumours about a Z M with a reworked S54 lately.
If that and the 300hp M1 are both true, it looks like bad marketing to me. A 300hp M1 coupe/hatchback/convertible and a 333hp M roadster/coupe :dunno:
If the 130i will be 250hp, I'd have to say let it be it. Make an M-tech 130i hatchback, like the ZHP, make some suspension and engine tweaks, sell it for $32k. 250hp is plenty for such a small car. As for convertible and coupe, let the Z do the job

I meant by the time the M1 comes out, the Z4 might have a V8 or something, 2007 is a long way away.
I agree the HP war is getting ridiculous. can't find a new cars these days with better than 19/25 mpg, since everyone is shooting for 300 hp.

I feel the same way...
I hope BMW makes another "real" M1.
The Motorsport 1 series should be badged as a CSi dammit.
