after hours of searching, I think i've come up with what I want.
I'm going to try to get 17x8 OZ superlegerras and toyo t1-s 225/45 front and 245/40 out back. My question is will the 245's fit safely on the 8-inch wide wheel?
oh and one other thing, overall, will this setup be good for everyday driving and soon to be light track use?
It'll fit on the wheel. Offset will determine if it'll fit on the car.

why not wider wheels?
that said, if I can get 275s on an 8" wheel...

from what i could find, the superleggeras only come in 8" width for 17" wheels... do they come in 8.5? I like these wheels because they're light and reasonably cheap
matter a fact, i can't even find them on the OZ website, maybe they're replaced?

no not good wheel are to small
it will not handel good because

you can get a 275 on an 8" wheel, you just can't get a 275 footprint on the ground with an 8" wheel :p

LOTS of people run 245s on 8 inch rims on the fronts of E46 M3s. Work fine.

But can you get a more effective footprint from a 275 on an 8" wheel than with a 225 or 245? :p

I know. I wish our RX-8 testing at the NEDIV had been more conclusive one way or the other. Between the weather and my lousy driving I left wihtout knowing much more than I started with. As I think about it, though, my driving wasn't *that* bad the first day and I was right there.
Sigh.

Well, we just need to rent Ripken for a weekend, rent or borrow the club trailer and set up a test weekend. Of course to test properly you will need two sets of wheels with the two different tires mounted. :)
Shouldn't cost more than a few grand. :)

It gets worse than that as I'd likely want to test Hoosier vs Kumho as well. Then, of course, the smooth asphalt at Ripken isn't anything like the broken concrete in Topeka.

Ok then, a couple of test weekends on different surfaces. :)
But I thought it was pretty much a given that the Hoosiers are better on the concrete. :dunno:
And then with things like shock settings and different offsets (with the Stock class rules) front sway bar and settings. Maybe a couple of months of testing. :)

There's a new Kumho in town that did pretty darn well in Topeka...

Screw it...back to basics for me: "Go fast. Don't hit cones."

I was looking around and now i'm thinking about the Kosei K1s for wheels instead. However tirerack only sells them in 17x8.5
so my new question now is will a 225/45/17 and 245/40/17 tires fit on a 8.5' wide wheel?
i don't think i should go any wider in the front... any thoughts?

245/40 will fit fine on an 8.5" wide wheel since the stock rear M68s are 8.5".
225/45 I don't think will look right... the front is 7.5" stock.

I am running my Hoosiers on K1s. So why not go with 235s or 245s all around if you are going with the same size wheel all around?
