My 92 525i wagon is stuck in 3rd gear in a limp home mode. Had it diagnosed at a local transmission shop. They were able to pull the code, but unable to tell me what it means. The code is 45 - anyone familiar with what the problem could be?

I don't think there is any code that short, if it's tranny related, it's probably
P0745 Pressure Control Solenoid Malfunction

Thanks
Is that an internal or external part?
How are the trannies diagnosed? do they have thier own controller? codes? diag tools?
why is there such a blackout on info?

The code is part of the ODBII (engine diag. codes), beyond that I don't know if the solenoid is accessible from the outside or not. Sorry.

My car is in limp mode.
I have a automatic 1997 528i and I live in Florida.
Recently the "All season traction" ASC, light came on in the instrument cluster. When this happens the car does not want to shift past 2nd gear.
This means I can not get on the hiway, or go past 40mph. The RPMs are too high over 40 mph. It's not shifting to 3rd or 4th gear.
Can it be a speed sensor problem. ABS?
This happened once before and it want away within an hour and all was ok. The problem seems to be spuradic.
Is there some sort of sensor that is causing the ASC to engage and not allow the car to shift to 3rd or 4th gear.?
Is this a transmission problem? seems to be a sensor problem?
When the light is out the car shifts properly, it runs great.
Please help, this is all new to me.
thanks, John

John,
Your problem might be as simple as a bad speed sensor on the rear left wheel (the one that feeds speed info to the ASC controller + speedometer + transmission controller.
Try swapping the speed sensor from the right rear wheel to the left see if that fixes it (if the right rear sensor fails, your cruise control won't work, I'm not aware of anything else affected by it)

Does this happen if you ride the brakes?
