My 2003 745i has approx. 5400 miles - everytime I insert the key fob to start the car - the steering column squeaks and grinds with a lound noise, especially after its been in the parking lot all day. The other day when I started the car - the yellow steering wheel light with the ! lit up - while driving the steering wheel was very stiff to move. Took it in to the dealership and the computer could not locate the problem. Also, the technician could not replicate the problem. They dismantled the outside of the steeling wheel column and used lithium grease. Inspite of that the noise still exists and they have opend a case file with BMW. As an expensive luxury car I am very dissapointed to see that I am having problems of this nature. Now I wish I had bought a Audi A8L instead.

I own a 2003 745. The I-drive feature is a disaster. They have a major recall on the car because of the I-drive software. The dealer requires the car for a week to "fix" it. Howver, they will not provide a loaner or any form of transportation. That's BMW's idea of customer service. The customer is out of luck after spending $75,000.00 on one of their cars. They can't seem to fix mine so on any givn day I won't have radio, heat/air, or GPS thanks to the quirky software of the I-drive.
The car on the road is great but BMW should be ashamed. AVOID this car and give your business to someone other than BMW>

Hello everyone.
This is my first post and hope that I can find the answer to a problem with my 2002 BMW 745i. The first problem is the steering wheel used to raise up and out after shutting down the car for easy exit and now it just stays where set.

i believe this was a feature that had the ability to be shut off... has your car been in the dealer recently for service? have you properly set your seat position memory?

My steering column was replaced under warranty due to excessive noise while it was adjusting to position automatically when the car is first started. I was told that the units are sealed so you can't grease them. Fight for a new column.

Also, I've always been given a BMW loaner every time I had mine in for service. Again, I believe this to be because I purchased the 7 as a CPO from the dealer. My wife's cousin bought his from a 3rd party and gets a Honda Civic as a loaner and sometimes they make him pay half the cost of the rental.

Do you have it at a higher setting. I too thought mine was not retracting until I realized it was already fully retracted while I drove. Mine is also extremely quiet so that would have contributed to me not noticing it was not working.

I had a similar issue on my '02 745i and the SA diagnosed a Servotronic module issue. Some chip that 'initiates' the car when it starts. The symptoms included no adjustment of the steering column when the car is started and difficult steering wheel turning - i.e., there was no power steering. Sometimes, i would start driving and it would 'come to life', adjust while driving and be easier to turn - a little freaky.

After $1000 repair, the new module seems to have done the trick. AND my extended warranty didn't cover it !#$%!%
