Ok, have searched a bit and did not find this one on the books: I was backing up in a parking lot tonight to go home. There was a lady in another car kind of pootling along in the same parking lane, but going kind of slowly. When she gets to my space (remember, I am in reverse, looking backwards, foot on brake) she slows and basically stops to look about aimlessly (no one in front or back of her).

So I give her a gentle "toot" on the horn and a wave "hello, can I back out please?" and sure enough, she moves on and I back out and proceed on my way.

What astonished me was that I realised this was the first time I'd really ever used the horn on the 3er, and the note it emitted really dissapointed me.

I mean, I don't really want to start a controversy (well maybe:) ) but have you listened to the horn on your car? I mean, does it sound like a BMW 3 series horn to you?

I guess I was expecting to be reminded of some Italian dual tone air horn 1960s sound, you know, urgent, stident, a take no prisoners horn; a horn to be reckoned with.

What I got was a piddling toot, a middle of the road, average, dare I say a Days Inn kind of sound, a horn sound that did not seem to me in the very least demand my respect (or even, say, live up to my the nearly bloody 40K I spent on this car ;) ) or at least damage eardrums.

What do you think? Am I horn insecure? Should I get online to the FIAMM America web site?

:D

I have always liked Fiamm horns (the electric ones, not the air horns) for a more authoritative sound.

I think the 3er horn sounds good. Ever heard a horn on Japanese car? Now they make me laugh.

The best OEM horn I have heard was on our old Plymouth Road Runner. A literal BEEP! BEEP!
