View Full Version : Dark side thoughts... Evo
Am I completely nuts? I am thinking of getting an Evo MR and pushing my 330 ZHP to my wife (who would be very happy with the arrangement as you can imagine).
I test drove an 03 model and while I was a little appaled at the amount of engine/transmission noise inside, I could not help but be awestruck at the combination of speed and handling. The steering is the best of all cars I've ever driven and the handling balance sublime.
So even though I'm a few years shy of a midlife crisis, am I completely nuts for craving a gung-ho rough performance car over my perfectly nice ZHP?
Rationalizing this, I could still drive the ZHP whenever I want, plus we'd be getting an AWD car suitable for winter (with the right tires). The alternative is to do a Euro delivery for a (wife's) 325xiT next summer - if they will still be selling that model by then...
Opinions welcome...

I know someone younger than you who has done exactly that (getting the EVO, not giving the 330 to the wife). :eeps:
The Evo is one hell of a car, but after having driven one several times (a standard one with some mods, not a RS or MR), there is no way that I could drive it daily, assuming 'daily' means a commute. If that's exactly what you're looking for, that's great. It's a fun car. Also, at least around here, you need to keep an eye out for the law, especially if you plan on driving it on public roads at anything past 2/10ths.

i drove an 03 evo last week. firmness of ride is very subjective, so i wanted to check it out for myself. coming from a dinan e30 driven on back roads [read sporty, firm, compliant OEM], the evo is not bad at all. the MR model is supposed to improve compliance without sacrificing performance, and that sounds just about perfect to me. one review i read claimed the MR model was more comfortable [suspension] than an m3.
the steering is what really amazed me... 2.1 turns lock-to-lock! :yikes: i would love to get one on a track to feel it at its extreme limits.
my wife already has the e46, so i can't push that to her the way you can. if i was serious about replacing the e30, the evo would be at the very top of my list by far.
as far as conspicuity is concerned, i would remove the wing [or use a plain deck-lid] on the road and save it for the track. i think very few people would give it a second look without the wing.

If you want a similarly pure automotive experience with a ridiculous 0-60 time, you could save some money and buy that Firehawk in Ride365's sig...then you can afford to keep the 330 _and_ do the European Delivery.

Yeah, but I'd sleep on the couch for the rest of my life... :tsk:
The Evo may be what I need after all...

Just keep it secretly in an off-site location...she need never know!

My neighbor just bought an Evo. Says he likes it for ripping around town but would not want to take a long trip in it. It has too much crud hanging off it for me to like it - I like my fast cars more stealthy looking.
I think the insurance may be higher than a ZHP also - from what he told me, it sounds like they are in the same insurance bracket as an M3.

The Evo MR is *supposed* to be a little more compliant in the suspension dept, which may be enough to make it more liveable for some. It'd be fun to test-drive one.
