WardsAuto.com said BMW is reviewing plans to bring a diesel-powered 1-series to the US, although it will not market a diesel engine until it can be sold in all 50 states

finally. 330d is long overdue.

3 years away? Yawn. Plus the sedan is by far the ugliest of the disguised 1 series cars. I hope the coupe comes before then.

Autoweek says we're getting a 130i sedan in 2006. I'd happily take the hatch as is right now, assuming it was no more than $30k. Any meat to this rumor?

Don’t spend too much time studying this photo of the new top-of-the-line BMW130i hatchback premiering in Geneva in March and going on sale in Europe later this year. It’s what lies under the sheetmetal that counts for U.S. customers.

Once BMW hammers out the styling on a 1 Series sedan for the U.S. market, look for our 130i to arrive in 2006 with the same powertrain as its Euro counterpart. That means the top-of-the-line 130i will pack a 3.0-liter, 258-hp, 221-lb-ft inline six mated to a six-speed manual, which should be good for 0 to 60 mph in about 6.0 seconds. BMW says the 130i’s handling has not been adversely affected by the larger engine, noting the 130i has lapped the Nürburgring in eight minutes, 35 seconds, just 20 seconds shy of the 3.2-liter 343-hp M3.

I hope so. I keep seeing 1 series hatches in Paris. Sexy little car. I'd love to dump my 330i in 2006 and snatch a 130i or 130cic!

what gonna happen to the old M3 engine? Dare i say, an M1. That would be one badass car.

and i think those numbers are misleading.. 0-60 in 6.2 sec. they just dont want the 1 seris to be a rival competor for the 3

I don't think BMW has ever recycled an out-going engine in a different model. They ceased production of the S52 when the S54 engine came out and ALL chassis sharing the S52 got the S54 instead, like the M roadsters and M coupes.

If the 1 series is ever going to see an M engine, it will most likely see a new M engine...Possibly derived from the S54 architecture BUT it will receive a new designation.

No, it's 0-62 mph in 6.2 sec. For as long as tiny fractions of a second mean everything on this board (and they do :)) you need to get your yardsticks right. 0-62 mph in 6.2 sec is 0-60 in 6 sec, and I suspect those are BMW AG performance figures.

I don't see the big deal, personally. The 330i is quicker than the 530i, the 530i quicker than the 730i. Why shouldn't the 130i be fractionally faster than the 330i?

I heard a story from Geneva that the 130i is selling so well in Europe (40,000 since it was introduced?) that they are bringing it to the US in 1 year. Dunno what that means, sedan, hatch or what.

Anyone hear about this?

Yes, it is 40,000 1 series sold in 3 months, I should clarify.

A couple sites, including Canadiandriver.com, have said the 130i is coming to the US in one year, but I wish we knew for sure when, and which body style.

So, if all of the info in these posts are consolidated and the facts accurate.. we then have the (either) 125i/130i as a MY2007; "coming here in 2005"--maybe like the MY2006 e90 introduced midyear 2005--which means more or less a little over a year from now in May or June of next year? Sounds good! Not that far off at all.

Woops, correct, I was quoting from a post but it should read "coming here in 2006." Which I can't find... weird, someone may have edited the post. It's so confusing!

I'd take a 120d hatchback right now... :supdude:

The most likely report I heard was from Autoweek, who said a 130i sedan is coming in 2006 to the US. I think that makes the most sense. Canadiandriver.com also said 2006 for the 130, but didn't say which bodystyle.

If BMW is afraid that the 1-series will cannibalize MINI sales, or that it would cheapen its image, they should send over only the 130i, or at least for the hatch version, and sell it for just under $30K. I'd buy one... big engine, small car, nimble handling... hmm, sounds like a BMW.

They would have to do better than that. The base E90 325i starts @ $30,300.00

Here's my hope for the 130i sedan. I find the E90 a bit too big, not to mention expensive.

Offer a 125i or 130i sedan w/ optional moonroof etc. so it can start at around $27k stripped. Then BMW enthusiasts at least have an option for getting a lightweight sports sedan.

Anyone notice the latest Roundel seems to think BMW might bring the 130i 5-door to the US, because of a change in recent US buyer habits? They seem to think BMW is noticing strong hot hatch sales in the import market. I assume they mean the Mini, Mazda 3, Focus, etc.

I'd buy one in a heart beat, like this one (black helps hide the weird lines of the M-sport aero kit)

Ditto... A performance, non-awkwardly proportioned (sorry 318/20ti fans) BMW hatch would be the awesome, especially looking like the one pictured with M kit.

Definitely a market for hatches/stationwagons esp. with increased desire for utility from a vehicle and increasing gas prices making SUVs on the verge of extinction (except for those who need them, and the others who are compensating with their 'insert Hip-hop SUV of the moment here').

Any word on an M version with perhaps the S54 motor?

Yeah any confirmation of a stateside 1 series (or an M version) would definitely lead me to change my goals for the next few years. I can say without a doubt I would not buy a 3 series next year if I knew for certain a 2007/2008 1 would arrive. I'd rather get a miata or mazda3 to hold me over and then jump on the 1.

Yeah, I'm holding off a car purchase til I hear one way or the other. The same Roudel said the M2 will more likely have a tuned version of the new 3.0L than the S54. That's my guess also.

I think one reason we could get the 5 door, is I think it might be difficult to make a 4 door version of the 1 that doesn't look awkward. It will be hard to slope down the roof to make a conventional trunk, and still have any headroom in the back.
