View Full Version : Test drove a 120i for 2 days!

What can I say....

With the help of a few friends we put about 600km on it in the last 24 hours - up and down the mountain ranges around here. This machine handles very well - extremely stable when pushed - and boy did we push it - and very well balanced, with and without DSC enabled. We were outcornering just about everything on the road.

I really felt like I was driving an M3 (except when we needed straight line acceleration!). This thing has excellent handling. The brakes were fantastic as well. I have driven these roads in an E46 M3 and my lowly E46 318i and Golf's etc. This 120i just blew me away. From a driving perspective it is leaps and bounds ahead in its class.

It has an excellent steering wheel and the feedback is exceptional.

The car we had was a 6-speed auto which was the only downside especially when pushing it. It was never quite in the 'right' gear - the manual would be fantastic. The ride was firm but not at all uncomfortable. We had runflats and normal suspension. It almost felt like it was leaning IN on the corners even though we knew it wasn't. The sports seats were very snug. After all the driving we did there was not one single creak or rattle to be heard.

The interior grew on me - looks beautiful at night when lit with the soft orange glow. The rear passengers have their own orange lights (the 2 little ones like the 3 series) on a separate overhead light section - which also has individual map reading lights (which when lit, don't disturb the drivers view at all). The plastics aren't exactly world class but they're pretty damn good considering this is an entry level vehicle - well put together & no rattles.

The Automatic A/C was great and it managed to control the individual driver/passenger temperatures very well. The in dash CD player can play MP3 files burnt onto a CD-ROM - and it even reads folders (and the music within them for better organising) - see attached pics.

The car we were in also had the bluetooth phone integration - which, I discovered by accident, also has voice control via the steering wheel. The user interface is much better than in the 3-series, but there is no SMS. The phone cradles are the same as the 3-series - just plug them in and your phone can charge & use the external aerial if needed.

Cruise control was with a nifty 'extra' shift paddle on the left - well designed - as was the clever indicators (all electronic on/off mechanism) & OBC functions. Our car also had the exterior door handle lights - apart from looking VERY slick they light up the ground around the car very well indeed. Talk about a head turner.

I think BMW has a winner here. An excellent drivers car which has the limits of its abilities WELL outside any normal day to day driving - nice to know what it can do when things get sticky.

Other Points of Note
- Rear leg room - not that bad. Comfortably sits 4 average size adults with about 5cm between knees & the rear of the seat
- Folding split rear seats sit nicely flat
- Glove box has a strange 'side compartment' which is useful for storage
- Start stop button is pretty slick as is the new key
- The 'key' has a metal key hidden inside, in case the battery goes flat

I hope they sell them by the truckload.

Great car!

Very cool, nice post. I would buy one as a daily driver for sure if they'd just bring it over here.

Sweet! I love just about everything you mention in this review. Just the right batch of bells and whistles, great handling - when the US version gets 6 cylinders I'll be the first in line. I'm also a big fan of the interior from what I've seen, but I love those night pics on the center panel. If you have any more interior pics (especially nighttime shots) I'd love to see them.

Great review!

Edit: If you have any higher-res shots of the exterior pic that are desktop worthy, I'd like that too. :D

Unfortunately I don't have many interior shots at all - I was having too much fun driving it! Here is another close up of the dash at night.

The night shot doesn't look that great in full size - small amount of motion blur & artifacts... sorry.

Thanks for that post - all sounds very good. First pic I have seen of the puddle lights. I was also wondering about keys which you have cleared up for me. I saw the lock in the door handle ans was aondering about them. As I have ordered keyless entry it is likely that my key might run out as it will not be plugged into the dash to re-charge. I suppose you just use the normal key then plug the electroic key into the dash to turn the alarm off or something.

The MP3 system sounds very good but I have ordered the Prof Nav system so I don't think I will be able to play MP3's.

Rear leg room - yes I went for a test drive yesterday and the dealer had to sit behind me and there was pleny of room for both of us. I am 6'2" but there is enough room in the front for me to move the seat forward a little when there are people behind me. Upshot is that I can comfortably sit behind my self.
I saw a 3 series in the show room with the seats as far back as they will go and that had the same or less leg room than the 1.

I've got about a month to wait till I get mine. Can't wait.

In the manual it states that the key for 'comfort access' does not have a built-in rechargable battery - it uses an normal, removable Lithium battery.

The way you lock/unlock is really cool as described in the manual.

Assuming the key is within range, if you grip the handle the doors unlock. If you keep holding the handle you can open the windows (much like holding down the 'unlock' button of a remote). There is a separate pad on the top of the door handle which is to lock the car (and wind the windows up) - you just touch your thumb on it and it works apparently.

From the way the manual reads, it appears that for the 'comfort access' system (aka wireless key transponder) there isn't a slot in the dash to put it - hence the reason for the normal battery.

As for the MP3 issue with the navigation I can't help you there - not sure about the answer to that.

Enjoy your new car!

PS: I own a 3 series and I agree with you about the rear leg room of the 3 & the 1 - there's not much between them honestly.

There is a post about keyless entry here:

the describes how it works - agrees with what you say.

Also confirms that MP3's won't work with the Prof Nav. Lets hope an update allows us to!

nitram luap- are you planning on getting a 1 series? If so, when and what are your specs?

My partner will probably get one in 18 months to replace her Golf.

The 120i is great
- We'd both prefer a manual transmission
- Add iDrive (with Prof Nav) - she's most impressed with this in my 3er
- Bluetooth Phone integration
- No sports suspension - the ride is just perfect without it, and very tight.
- Other things will depend on how we feel at the time (comfort access, lights package, xenons, PDC - front & rear, leather seats)
- Aftermarket tinted windows

Once you add all these things up it becomes very expensive though. I really am annoyed that metallic paint is ridiculously overpriced.

Partner? :dunno:

I wish they'd make a 1er with no rear seats. Just the front seats and then a whole ton of space back there for all the stuff I never need to carry. But at least I'd have a honking huge trunk space! I saw a Honda CRX today that didn't have a rear seat. Dunno if the owner took it out or if it came like that, but man, that would be great.

Z3/M Coupe?

Oh, was that a 2 seater hatchback with a massive trunk? :dunno: Its styling is not my cup of tea...

BTW, I also wouldn't mind a BMW that looked like the Nissan 350Z but was lighter, had a huge trunk, and handled better. :)

So, how much is a supercharger for the 2.0? :)

Good q. But I don't believe there are any forced induction kits for any of the four-pot Valvetronics. Aside from the difficulties of turbo- or supercharging a car with eight butterflies* and no traditional throttle body, there isn't the market for it - especially as BMW's newer sixes counter most of the shortcomings of the old engine range.

* I am talking about the inlet valves, of course :)
