Actually most folks on here are pretty quick to help if they know the answer to your question. I just looked at your posts and it strikes me maybe not a lot of posters are familiar with a car as old as yours. :dunno:

You have to take into consideration that the car you`re dealing with is older than many of the members of this forum! My history of owning BMWs goes back to 1980, so I`ll try to help if I can. I`m not sure the 1980 320i even *had* an air pump....it was around `80 when BMW went to the more effecient 3-way catalitic converter/O2 sensor system....the air-pump was an interim Band-Aid used in the late `70s as an attempt to reduce emissions, but was abandoned once a better system came along.
If your car *does* have an air pump, it will probably be about the same size & shape as an alternator or AC compressor, and have a hose about 1 inch in diameter connecting it to either the intake manifold or the valve cover.Hope this helps.

Bob

OMG dude, I'd like to help but I was 3 when your car was built
Maybe you should start www.E12fanatics.com :D (or whatever model you have)

my 1974 2002 does not have an air pump or cat converter but 1975s and 76s I believe did have air pumps. These were all carburator models except for the TII
I think air pumps were dropped when fuel injection came aboard. My sons 1983 320i has fuel injection and cat converter - no air pump. If your car has fuel injection- no air pump. I am relatively newbie but am old enough to have your type cars, gee hated to admit that. :tsk:

honestly man, i would take your car to a shop that specializes in maintaining and restoring of classic cars... they'll have the info you need. you may have to pay them to evaluate the car and correct it, but i'm sure they would be willing to teach you as they go along.
my 0.351 cents :)

I think `77 was the first MY for the 320i....they were still building 2002s right through `76.

I feel your pain, Bimmie. I run into the same thing even with a 1996 model. Some, but not all posters here are only interested in the latest/greatest BMW models with thousands of dollars of electronic systems in the dashboard. Perhaps we need a forum for aging Bimmers? Or aging baby-boomers!

1996? I didn't think the E46 3er came out until 1999. Just kidding, I like E36's too. Part of the problem is people tend to be more excited about recent purchases than cars they've had awhile. When I got my truck, I was in many a forum discussing all sorts of things. After awhile, I got tired of seeing the same old thread revisited time and again, so I faded away. At least I don't remember any threads about where the name "Dodge" came from. Actually, Roadfly is better suited for this with its discussions on a per model basis.

I forgot to mention: Of course, soon no one will care about those old E46's. It will all E90, all the time. Just look at the threads about it creeping up.

Thanks - could not find it here in the US. I even tried Amazon.com. I guess I have to get the UK version. :)

They had the 320 in 75 and 76 also in Europe. Not sure if the first were considered a 75 or 76 MY. I had a 77 320i/Auto, from 86-89. Loved it, but with the auto there was very little acceleration, and she topped out at 90mph. But was good on fuel for the time 26mpg.
