I am, by no means, a "Pimp my ride specialist" but I did this installation on my E39. Looks clean and works great. I did lose my little storage area, but it's a small price to pay to keep the cockpit of my car neat and without any unsightly clips or brackets. Hope you like...

:) Hi Ben Dejo, nice install but have you linked the Ipod to the incar system, and does it have Sat Nav/Comms? If so what kit/cable do you use? No one in the Uk seems very clued up in this area.

Regards Brian.

Yes, it is hooked into the car stereo system. I used the Dension 112-BMW-T IceLink kit. The kit hooked directly into the CD changer plugs in the trunk of the car. The actual setup of the kit is a snap. Basically the Dension kit is "plug and play." It even comes with a long cable that connects the docking unit (where the iPod docks) at the front of the car to the CD changer plugs in the trunk.

I have the non-DSP system without the Nav/Comms. The installation required a little work, some dremel work, but overall, worth the work to have a "clean" installation that doesn't ruin the cockpit of my car. Sounds great, looks neat, and works well.

Although the Dension kit lacks some features (i.e. change playlists, view the track info on the head unit) it is a welcome addition to my car sound system.

Hi ben Dejo, nice job and it sounds straight forward, even for a Brit. Do you still have use of the stock BMW CD Changer? Can you point me in the right direction of a dealer who will ship to UK please?

I just ordered directly from Dension at www.densionusa.com. I have no idea what the shipping policy is to the UK. No, once you install the Ice>Link you cannot have a CD changer as you use the connectors for the iPod. But, why would you want to have a CD changer when you can have an iPod? Unless you want to have the flexibility to use a friends CD or something like that.

BTW...I think my family and I are going to visit London for a week in November...should I pack warm clothes? Any suggestions for a family of 5 (parents, 9 yr old, 6 yr old, 3 yr old)?

You're welcome. Glad I could help. A wood grain iPod would be very nice...it would match the interior. Maybe I could do a "hack" to the iPod. Hmmm...

I also took a bunch of pics of the actual installation and how I did it, just in case someone wanted a how-to. If you want to see them let me know. It might save you some headaches.

 Thanks Ben Dejo, it's a brave man that leaves Florida for the UK in November! The weather will be fairly cool, certainly warm clothes essential in Nov. Suggestions for a family of five in London in Nov? Certainly a visit to the London Eye, great views over London and up and down the Thames, The Tower of London, is great but make sure you get to take a tour with one of the Beefeaters (Tower Gaurds) as it costs nothing extra and they give you all the gen on the history with some great anecdotes. I'm a Londoner born and bred, in fact a true Cockney and this summer I took my kids aged 20 and 17 and they both loved it..much to my surprise as did my wife and myself...some years since I had been there! Gues you would have to see Buckingham Palace and Horse Gaurds Parade. Piccadilly Circus and Liecester Square are pretty cool and China Town is also good. If you want some good street entertainment then Covent Garden is good with some shops and traditional pubs. What about taking in some of the museaums...best one for kids of all ages is The Science Museum in Knightsbridge, loads to entertain the kids and you can spend the whole day there for sensible money. Send me a PM or email if you want more and i'll dig out some URL's for you. Regards Brian.

Thanks for the info. I am gathering what I plan on doing...We may actually stay on some canal boats in Birminham. See www. canaltime.com and then the Union Wharf Marina to see what we might do for a few days. Sound fun...what do you think?

It's supposed to work w/ the Active Cradle, we will be as we have a few sample units arriving soon: http://www.macskinz.com/dension_sample.jpg

Hi,

I saw your icelink install and knew right away: this was the way to go!
I got the icelink in today and installed it, which was a breeze. I have the version which plugs in right at the cd player at the front,, so I had to squeeze everything behind the cd player and MID, but it saved me a tricky cable routing...

To show the functionality, I made a small lo-res video, get it here:
Icelink e39 install (http://www.letitwork.com/icelink.avi) (2.7 mb)

C'ya!

Very nice. I always thought that storage area was pretty useless anyway. You've used it to great effect.

Sweet install, if my TEC cupholder wasn't already using that spot, the ice>Link cradle would go there in an instant.

I've been using the Docking Cable in the meantime, I may go for the Active Cradle setup in the armrest (converted to opening style).

Great looking install , I just ordered the ice link system and had a few questions if you have the time. 1. do the steering wheel controls now control the ipod? 2. does the info from the ipod now appear on the nav screen? (if u have one) if not does this install allow you access to the ipod controls in the current position. Thanks for the help.

Steering wheel controls were always active in the ice>Link, even before the BMW kit was introduced. As soon as ID3v2 text support is released, you will be able to see Artists/Song Titles in the NAV Screen/MID display.

I used to use an iTrip radio transmitter, but with the ICElink install, you get CD quality (considering, you have good MP3 rates of course).

Any guesstimates on when the ID3V2 text support will be available, and released? Also will we be able to upgrade an older kit to get this?

I just heared that there is a new version, the Icelink plus, which has tags and more in it!!!
I feel a bit ripped, since I bought the my icelink just two weeks before the new upgrade and they never mentioned something new was coming.. Maybe they can do me a good upgrade offer, but for now, I have a bad taste in my mouth....

All,

From what Ive seen, the Ice Link Plus allows you to view the mp3 tags on the radio directly. With this in mind, does anybody have any photos showing this operation? I have a 2003 530i with DSP that Im looking to add hard drive based mp3 functionality to and it looks like the Ice Link plus is the way to go.

Any pics or short movie clips would be greatly appreciated!

Three questions:

1) Where would I put the Ipod in an E60? There is no storage space at all in this car.

2) Is there a way to have a switch installed so that you could switch to CD when you wanted to? I'd use the IPod pretty much exclusively for music, but I sometimes have books on tape, conference recordings, etc - that I wouldn't want to have to put on the IPod to listen to.

3) Do you have to use the IPod itself to select what to play? I think the answer is "yes", but that seems very awkward to use while driving - i.e. dangerous. And if you can't use it while driving, it doesn't seem that useful. Can anyone comment on this?

Thanks.

Dave,

There is no ice>Link available for the e60 as of yet, since the system consists of fiber optics. We expect to have an application ready before Summer '05.

Tom,

You mentioned that the ICE Link Plus would have the IDv2 tag display issue resolved by Dec 2004. Can you provide the group with a status update?

Also, nice movie file! I noticed that the "Savage Garden" example cut the band's name short to "Savage Gard". Is this a limitation that we will have to live with once the ICE LInk Plus support the display of the IDv2 tag info? Or, will there be a scrolling option to allow for more than X characters to be displayed for artists or song names?

Lastly, can you provide us with a status update regarding Dension support? I have gotten mixed results from the support group for email inquiries about the product. Sometimes I get a response, and sometimes I don't. It has been hit or miss, which isn't very encouraging for a potential customer such as myself.

Please advise. Thanks!

James,

We stated that ID3v2 text support would be ready by Winter '04, it is out and others are using it - but still considered in the beta stage. At time time, the text is scrolling when used with our v2.05 firmware.

As soon as ID3v2 goes final - there will be a lot more features.

Responding to your technical support issue - feel free to email me directly [tom@densionusa.com] on your particular issue. If I cannot handle the specific request myself, I will redirect it to someone who can.

Looks like I'm late to this party...but, just purchased ice-link plus for 2002 E39, no NAV, no DSP...Dension emailed me 2B2 firmware and instructions - now I can control everthing from the steering wheel and have artist/title on the head unit. Nice!

Anyone ever get BenDejo's detailed pics/instructions? Please send - I'd like to duplicate that install.

Thanks!
