View Full Version : The prospect of NO new BMW's to wish I owned is sad.

Now that I have seen the new 3 series I can say I wouldn't buy any new model.
The 7 series is bad.
The 5 series is a small 7 series
The 6 I had hopes for but its sad.
the 3 is a smaller 5
the z4 is almost desirable but not quite.
They are all so rental car like.
The Mercedes are looking better every day.
I do want a E46 M3 though.
Thats all IMO of course.

He asked for BMWs to wish for. :dunno:
Assuming I enroll in contortionism class and learn how to get in and out of the Elise in under a minute, would it really give me the same torque launch ? :p
Where is your report?

Well, Sue & I put our order in for a new (2005) X5 4.4 last week. I'm looking forward to getting that.
No more silver, this one will be Kalihari Beige/Truffle Brown. Now I just have to get Dwayne to tell me (again) where he got those Coco mats.
The new valvetronic version of the 4.4 puts out about twenty-five more horsepower than the engine in our 02 model. That's like doing a mod, right?

I wish I had a Z8.
I thought Z8 was discontinued, so this wouldn't count as a new car.
After the E46 is gone, the only new BMW that captivates me style-wise enough to buy one is the 1-series. I saw one up close while picking up my 330, and it looked nice. The best thing is it doesn't have the double-hump after-thought dash with the Nav, like the new E90 3er, E60 5er, and E63 6er have.

the Z4 was my third new BMW, can't say I'm all that enthusiastic about buying another one from them again. Many of BMW's general philosophies seem bassackwards to me :dunno:
ps: not sure why you'd knock all those other BMW's and then indicate you'd like to own a fat, understeering E46 M3 sow

My 2000 M Coupe is the 1st BMW I've ever owned.
I've never really been a fan of the "general shape/style" of BMW's historically...but that's JMHO
I loved the M Coupe from the 1st moment I saw one and new I would eventually own one. The M Coupe is it's truly unique in..... a great many ways.
I do like the new 6 Series ...but the price is just over the top... IMHO.
The Z4 is ...growing on me..... and and I'm excited about a possible M-Z4 series....
That would be a keeper but...again, the problem there is gonna be..... price.
I'll tell you this definatively....I will NEVER buy a CPO vehicle again...NEVER!!!!!
Whatever comes next in my ongoing parade of cars will be....... BRAND NEW!!!!!!!
The Elise seems to be the direction I'm heading in...
I fit very confortably in it... it drives like a SOB...... it's within the limits of a "reasonable" price IMO.... and hopefully all the introductory bugs/price gouging will be worked out soon.
In a few years... my plan is to keep my M Coupe as a daily driver and enlist the Elise as my.....new toy.
JMHO
Peace,

The MC was targeted to a very small audience. It was affordable too. The only other (similar) car since the MC was the Z8 but at a significantly higher price point. I doubt BMW will make another limited appeal car any time soon. Their future (as with any high volume manufacturer) is with the mainstream cars.
If BMW ever made a car <=3000lbs, then I'd be interested. Actually this is easy. They just need to buy Lotus

Bob's original message on the prospect of NO new BMW's to own is exactly the way I feel. I also do not like the middle hump for the dreaded i-drive you crazy, or the cold feel of the "flat" looking inside appointments. I think BMW has lost their way with styling, both inside and out. You almost can't tell them from a Honda coming toward you on the street. My dealer has more 5 series on his lot than I've ever seen. They just sit and sit and sit.
I also like the look of Mercedes cars better and better with every passing day. Unfortunately my MB dealer here is garbage. I sold 3 MB's that I owned because of him when I made my first move to BMW's in '97.
The BMW dealer service here is what keeps me in BMW's. I am constantly on the lookout for the right, pre-owned car to purchase as a long term keeper until BMW's styling turns around, or until I get a brain transplant.
I'm enjoying my new X5. I'd like a little more rumble from the exhausts. The Coco mats are fantastic. They are at cocomats.com. The product is a little expensive, but it lasts and lasts and lasts. I think you get the idea.

I have to totally agree with you. My wife and I have always had two M cars over the last eight years. First, a '95 and '96 M3, now the '96 M3 and a 2001 M Coupe, the last two bought new. There is nothing in the BMW lineup right now that I would buy.
As a result we are looking at the Lotus Elise, S4 Avant, and Mini Cooper S as candidates to add to the garage. Oh, and if I could find a totally pristine '95 M3, I will add that to the garage too.
Rex
Have you ever thought of switching to motorcycles? This is the golden age of BMW bikes. They can do no wrong.
I like the Z4. A lot. They are really expensive, but I like them.
I like the new 5. A lot. They are really expensive and really big for my taste, but I like them. They have a lot more personality than the E39 5s.
I do not care for the 7. I've never liked 7s. I do not care for the new 3. Too plain, too boring. After owning an M coupe, I can't go for a mainstream car like a 3. I'd rather have an A4 or a Saab, despite their relatively poor performance and numbness.
I think most of us would be totally happy with Porsche products and we would never look back, but they are very expensive too. Maybe used P-cars is the way to go.

Giving you props for the M2 (2 -er) pic! YES TO the 1 series.
Anyhow, I think the only luxury brand with any exciting products other than Bimmer is Infiniti.
After the so called "golden years" in the 80-90's with the cookie cutter 3-er & 5er, I was so glad to see BMW takes chances. While they aren't perfect, they aren't boring either . When 1 rolls down the street, it's not blended in with the scenery that's for sure!
My biggest complaint of the new designs are the ugly hood/kidney treatments. But then Bimmers were never known for a pretty face (esp the Coupe which most ppl like to shoot pix from the rear...ahem...)
Inifinity has sort of done it a little better executing the design esp with the FX35/45 & the M45 & mimic'd the 3-er's with the G35's.
But do the new Bimmers excite me to want to own? YES. cause there really isn't anything out there comparatively speaking IMO. I bought the MC because of its timeless looks & unique engineering characteristic. I still see that in the new Bimmers. I hope the old loyalists don't rattle the sabres too much. I Can already see the new '06 3-er being a heavy concession to some interests that's gone wrong...
Some short answers:
No to the '06 3-er
Yes to the '05 5-er
Yes to the Z4
Yes to the 7-er
No to the 6-er
Yes to the X3
Yes to the X5

Well, there are a few BMWs I'm still excited about...
1. E90, especially the M3 variant... please bring a 4dr.
2. the V10 M5/M6
3. M-Z4... like the looks of the Z
4. X5 4.8... always liked the 4.4, now there's more
But, that said, i'll probably be picking up a :mitsu: Evolution IX for my next car/toy. Not sure if i'll trade in my ZHP for the next M3... time will tell.
Styling aside, the new 7 and 5 are still dynamically the best cars in their class. Remember when BMW changed the steering in the E46 to make it easier to park for housewives and shoppers? Well, the cry was heard and they changed it the following model year.
The 7 is being refreshened, the active steering on the 5 changed, and BMW has realized iDRIVE is not everyone's cup, so it is becoming an option on the E90, ? later versions of the 5.
But, what makes a BMW a BMW remains... great engines, exceptional handling for all road types.
Can't wait to see what comes next... now if they could make a high performance AWD.

I sadly think the 1 series is just too ugly for words. Well, some words come up ... like "bloated" and "awkward". I will give it time though, as many thought the M Coupe to be an ugly duckling at first and the Z4 has definately grown on me. I read one magazine call the 6 series a triple-priced 90s Camero. That would've stung had I just bought one. I mean, it looks great, but the performance is just about right where a Camero would be...same with dimensions and weight. I agree about the HORRIBLE look of the double-humped dash required to get the badly detested iDrive system. I tend to like simple cars that I can see actually restoring decades from now. How the heck are you going to restore an iDrive system or any of these fancy-pants dynamic driving aids? I think BMW is torn between trying to sell cars and a passion to make them. They are going up and down market at the same time. They try a new design philosophy because I guess thats what car companies HAVE to do. Then, they quietly tone it down when people freak out. Sounds like fear of commitment to me. You used to be able to look at a BMW and just GET IT! You'de understand its purpose right away. Now, its like trying to figure out someone you meet on a Friday night at a bar...are they really themselves or are they just trying too hard to appeal...to tell you what you want to hear.
Sorry for the vent-fest.

Okay, bookmarked now. Are yours Jaspe (brown/tan/black) or black/tan?
Whichever ones you have, they looked tailor made to the Truffle interior!

I do hope that the 1 series coupe turns out to be as good looking as the photo***** but I somehow doubt it. The front-end will still not be quite right- but i might be able to get over it.

Personally, I've lost interest in anything new that BMW makes.
The E46 is about as boring as they come.
Park a new 5 series next to a mid-size Acura (TL?) and you can barely tell them apart.
The rear of a new 6 series looks very much like a Dodge Stratus/Plymouth Breeze.
The new 7 series is ugly beyond words and I used to be a fan of the Sevens.
I don't get the point of the X3.
I'd rather have a Touareg than an X5.
I could go on, but you get my point. My wife likes the Z4; I'm undecided. However, they're still far more money than I want to spend on a car. My last 2 cars (318ti & Jetta VR6) were done in by someone rear-ending me; I might snap if the same thing happened to a $40K car of mine. However, I'm still keeping my eyes peeled for the "right" Z3 for her.

The better half says they're Jaspe. Plus Jaspe is the only 3 color version I can find on the website, so it must be them.
So what options did you get?

That was my guess (Jaspe), thanks for verifying that.
Kept it simple, same as the last one; sport, premium, cold, & rear climate packages. Didn't get the Nav and this time we left off the premium sound system (as we never took advantage of it). We'll be sticking with the 18" wheels and all season tires (the 19" look very good but would require alternate snowshoes up here).
Looking forward to "seeing around corners" with the new one. Hell, we might start going out after dark now :yikes:

I wonder if the Aston Martin dealer will take my townhouse in on trade? Between my 330Ci and my equity, I might just be able to afford the payments. Of course, driving up to soup kitchens in it would look bad.

Haha, I hate to say it but I would definitely love to have/buy any new BMW out there. But I am only 15 so I don't have much experience with nice cars. I love BMW..and it is hard to see the beloved e46 go. But the rest of the cars are nice. I really couldn't think of many other cars I love or car brands I truly love aside from Porsche. They're just beautiful automobiles IMHO.
