I got a new RAZR from T-mobile and the BMW does not pair with it. I went to the local Cingular store today and tried their RAZR, SLVR and V557 and they all had difficulty pairing. The phones were able to find the devices, but were 'unable to connect'.
But, for some reason it was able to pair and even download address book from my Friend's T-mobile RAZR.
Overall, the Samsung A920 worked best. The only problem was that it could not download the address book. But it was very robust and the voice quality was superb over the BMW system.
Frustrating. I am going to see if the dealer will check my car for software updates.

I guess I've been lucky. My 2 RAZRs from Cingular pair just fine.

Pairs with no problem.
Doesn't transfer address book, but does transfer quick dial favorites
Transfers between car and phone when entering / leaving vehicle
Sound quality sucks but this is because I bought the first generation from BMWBluetooth (now Advanced Autovations - side note ... they sold me a unit that had been discontinued for 13 months when I purchased it. Bad Customer Service. Caveat Emptor - My fault.)
I will be installing the latest generation ULF tomorrow. I am sure that this will fix the sound quality and SMS issues.
I will repost to certifty.

Forgive my ignorance but im a newby. Can anyone tell me if the samsung d600's phone book can be viewed. I can use the phone to dial and recieve calls but not search. It will display the number on an incomming call but not the name as it appears in my phone.....
I tried my friends Sony K750i and his W800 walkman phone and they paired up very easily including full use of the phone book ect.. even though they are not on BMW's list of approved phones either.
I have searched around and nobody seems to mention the Samsung D600 at all so it looks like i will get myself a Sony. Shame cos i really like the Samsung.

Phone model: Sprint PPC-6700 with upgrade from Windows Mobile 5.0 build 14352.0.1.0
to the next build available as a download from Sprint. Prior to the upgrade the phone paired and would make calls using either manual dialing or the dial number voice command, but the phonebook would not transfer. After the upgrade, my phonebook with 407 entries transferred in < 5 min and has worked flawlessly since. However, an idiosyncrasy of the phonebook display is that the names are alphabetized by first name rather than last. I haven't tried sending SMS messages.
Car model: 2006 M5

SLVR 7 from Cingular works great. I have used the phone for a month without any complaints. No problem pairing and the address book that took about an hour to download with my SE 637 only took a few minutes.

I have a 1 month old 06 550i and a Verizon Treo 650. The Bluetooth works great with no problems whatsoever. Yes, the phonebook doesn't transfer, but all of the speed dial numbers transfer.
I'm pleasantly surprised that it works without drama . . .

I had similar issues where my old razr v3 paired perfectly. When I tried pairing a newer version of the rzv V3 the address book did not sync. but I copuld make phone calls by dialing on the phone or the car's phone keypad. I also tried the motorola slvr and also I could not get the addressbook to sync. My latest phone is the T-mobile MDA pocket PC phone and it pairs just fine except once in a while I get the error message "Please activate phone" Not sure why it does this but I am due for my 1st oil change/15k mile check and I am going to tell the dealer that I am having issues with the I-drive and see if they do an upgrade. I truely am having a minor issue where the screen goes blank every blue moon.

My Sprint Treo 650 does not work with my '05 545i. The address book doesn't interface. The handsfree aspect of it only works when you initiate a call or answer a call directly from the phone. I don't know if BMW needs to come out with a new software update and/or Palm needs to do a firmware update for the phone. The Treo 650 is an exellent device and I'm confident that resolution will come about soon. I'll keep you posted.
I also have a 05 545i. I have the Treo 700 and it works. Not all features such as the contacts, but I can use the voice acitvated calling. There is a new software update coming out next month that may fix the rest of the features.

I ordered a Motorola E815 just to use the Bluetooth capability of the 2007 525i that I purchased. It took a while to get the correct combinations between the car and phone to sync up; however, the reward was well worth the challenge. The Bluetooth/E815 combination works very well and the audio quality is great. Then I assigned the diamond button on the steering wheel for my directory and it also comes up flawlessly.
I have ordered the E815 cradle from the dealer ($140) as it allows the phone to use the car's battery as well as antenna. Since I am on the road quite a bit, often in rural areas, the use of the external antenna plus the ground plane effect that it will create should increase the effective radiated power of the cell phone probably by a factor of two with a resulting ERP of about a watt. It may not sound like much, but with a CDMA system like Verizon's, it should be quite helpful.

Hi,
I see some people have posted reviews on BMW Blue Tooth and Treo 700w back in November, December 2005. While Treo 700w was launched only by Verizon and that too only after Jan 5th 2006 to the general public, I am forced to think about the credibility of the messages posted here. I thought we as a BMW owners are using this forum to learn from one another and help each other out.
Please correct me if I am wrong.
Thanks

Loved my Razr V3 but I needed a better email and calendar option. Looked like a PDA/Phone combo was the way to go.
Tried out a few different options from Cingular before arriving at the Cingular 8125. Pairs perfectly with my 330i. Everything seems to work fine.
Cingual PDA/Phone combos I tried that do not work include:
HP ipaq hw6515 (ick)
Seimens sx66 (this thing is awesome otherwise though a tad big and heavy)
Treo 650 (yawn)
Blackberry 7100 (wasn't really interested but I was getting desparate)
The Cingular 8125 is nice. I'm happy with it. If you're in need of a pda/phone combo and you need it to sync up with your car, this is a pretty good compromise.
For phone only use, the razr's still the best phone I've ever had. Thin and light is definitely the way to go.

I just got a 8125 and I paired it to my BT but when I go to use it most of the time it doesnt let me scroll through my address book or anything. It defaults to my last call and thats it or it just doesnt access my address book.
ANY TIPS???
Thanks

I took mine to Hank Aaron BMW in Union City GA and got my Razr working hands- free making and receiving calls perfect, and my address book downloads from my Motorola Bluetooth V3 Razr cell into the BMW Bluetooth RAM memory each and every time my car is started. Having my iDrive to accept new Bluetooth cost me $315.00 at Hank Aaron BMW in my 2004 530i

I finally got the stooges at my BMW Dealership's service center to fix my TCU so that my Treo 650 Unlocked GSM with TMobile would connect correctly every time. The problem wasn't about pairing because it could be paired at any time. The problem was that after the first successful connection then the subsequent "sleep mode" the car goes into after some time the phone and car wouldn't connect. After around 48 hours or so the phone would connect every other day or so, almost randomly. The way I got the service center to finally get off their butts and try fixing it was by telling them to try the same troubleshooting steps I took to determine it was the car's problem and not my phone (since they kept telling me it was the phone since it wasn't on the official BMW compatible phones list.) I told them to get a phone that was on the list, pair it, use it to make a call or two, then wait for the car to go into sleep mode. Afterwards, insert the key and wait for the phone to connect to the car - it shouldn't and it didn't. They then reprogrammed the TCU (Telephone Control Unit) with new software and it works like a charm now. It even worked with my girlfriend's Motorola PEBL yesterday. The quickest way to get this problem fixed if you are having the same problem where it pairs OK but only connects every once in a while is with the following service codes to give to your service center. I'm not sure which one is correct, I'm just getting all the stuff from my service invoice:

Hi Sleeper,
I can confirm that the BB 8700c (using Cingular) works very well. Out of the box, the BB8700c was loaded with v4.1.0.194 and paired with I-Drive on the first try. I sync'ed over 200 contacts, most with multiple numbers, in about one minute. As I reported previously with my older BB7920, this BB OS allows the display of the type of number next to the name (home, mobile, work) if you have more than one number for that contact.
Good Luck,
Big Pete

The coverage of cellular networks is a relative thing. Without boring you with a bunch of technical stuff, my experience has been that CDMA-based technology works better than GSM. Verizon uses CDMA and Cingular is GSM. However, this is all relative to your part of the world and how the carriers have developed their networks. Cingular is (for a while longer) part owned by BellSouth and in Atlantia, I'd expect that they would have excellent coverage (just a guess). In the Mid-Atlantic, Verizon's coverage is hard to beat. I travel a lot and switched to Verizon for the better coverage; particularly when inside major buildings where Verizon has often installed adjunct hardware to boost the signal. I have not regreted the change. In my office, which is full of radio engineers, 80% of the staff uses Verizon. One guy likes the carry-over minutes and has Cingular; however, he is always complaining about the lack of coverage. He has carry-over minutes because he can't get a signal to use the silly thing.:p

The Cingular ads really amuse me, in which they brag about "fewer dropped calls." Well, duh. Hard to drop a call if you cannot connect in the first place.

Find a Compatible Handset - Not all Bluetooth phones will work!
Unfortunately, not all Bluetooth compatible phones will work (partially or fully) with BMW's Bluetooth systems. As such, “Bluetooth” is an ambiguous term and insufficient to ensure compatibility. That is unfortunate, since "Bluetooth" is all that is typically included in the phone's description.
My experience is a good example: my do-everything SonyEricsson P900 does not work with my Bluetooth-capable car (the SonyEricsson P900 lacks a "handsfree profile" required to work with the BMW implementation of integration of cell phone and car). Successful 6 Series Bluetoth retrofit, but phone incompatible (http://bimmer.roadfly.org/bmw/forums/e63/5905660-1.html)
Even if you have a "BT-compatible" phone with the BT "handsfree profile," there are other features that may or may not work properly. For example, the phone should automatically share its phone book with the car to enable a set of nice features: based on your phone's address book: Calling Name display and
BMW Customer Assistance has a short list of compatible phones (SE T68i, SE T610, SE T630, Motorola V600). A more extensive compatibility list is here:

Those who use the V710, what software version do your phones have? According to the BMW site, only the one with 1.4 would work. How about the newest version 02.03?

I JUST BOUGHT A BRAND NEW 550I 6 speed, great car. I was very excited to use the Bluetooth feature and then ran into HELL. I asm using a Motorola Razor cingular phone.
The phone syncs up fine most of the time. Address book loads up fast.
BUT, every time I am on a call and another one comes in (call waiting), and I decide not to answer it, Both calls are dropped instantly after the second call stops beeping. It happens every time and is very frustrating. Right now I have turned my call waiting feature off permanently on the Razor which defeats the purpose of call waiting. I saw that other people have this problem on other forums. I am using cingular as the carrier. Anyone have a fix or update answer for this? I hope so!!!
I also sync my phone to an apple mac using isync. I am now the proud owner of two complete phone books on my phone, one regular one and one that strarts again indented e.g. with the hyphon.

-Frank blob
The whole phone book is there indented followed by the regular phone book that follows, Both phone books show up on the phone and the car bluetooth screen. Every time the phone is paired up and I am in the car the phone asks me to accept or deny the connection, there is no automatic link without my physical activation. It gets very frustrating finding the phone and then linking them manually every time.
Now the garage door opener, that is a joke, This car refuses to accept my mirror button command, my wifes acura works like a dream.
Next I will be sharing some great information about some phone book tricks as soon as I get the bugs out of the BMW system.
thanks in advance for any help with this!!!

I am very pleased to report that the Samsung i730 works with my new car. I was frankly very surprised. It even uploads ALL of my contact entries and does it very quickly (around 300 names and numbers). BMW has greatly improved the pairing process compared to my 2005 X3. It is simple, fast, and you don't need to remember a passkey (you simply enter a number of your choosing on both the car and the phone).
This phone now integrates as seamlessly as any of the "officially approved" phones. I don't know if BMW changed something for 2007 or the Windows Mobile 5 upgrade helped.
If you use this combination, be sure to select both the "Hands-Free" and "OBEX Push" Bluetooth services on the phone when you pair it with the car. If you do not choose "OBEX Push", the phone book from the phone will not upload to the car.

I Spoke to Cingular, then took the car to BMW where I received a phone Bluetooth update leaflet on BMW letterhead. It explained that the BMW Bluetooth does not support call waiting at any time with a Razor phone.
If you get another call while on your phone and ignore it, both calls will end after the waiting calls ends. The only way around this issue is to answer the other call using your actual phone, then after, resume the other call. In this instance 99% of the time the other call will have dropped. Other option is to turn off call waiting on the Razor altogether.
This is a MAJOR FLAW. I am shocked that no one else has this issue or has commented on this on the forum. I have the correct firmware on the phone. I am now dealing with Motorola directly and their service department. I am dealing with the head technician. They have identified the flaw. They also realize that the incoming waiting call does not show up on the Bimmer screen. They are working on a fix to make the Razor fully functional with Bluetooth. If anyone wants to see the paperwork from BMW I can fax it to them. The Razor is flawed and NON fully functional, and to be honest is a major pain in the behind every day for me. I have a brand new 550i 6 speed.

IIRC it has also been mentioned that the second call not showing up on your NAV screen is not a BMW issue but a BT standards issue. There appears to be no method by which any BT phone can notify the car of a second incoming call.
T-Mobile is the only vendor (I think) that has not tweeked with the BT settings that meet BT standards on their phones. Some vendors have neutered the BT on the phones they offer so that you cannot download pictures via BT directly into your computer, only through their picture sending service for which they charge a fee. Who knows what else they have messed up.:dunno:

All Verizon RAZER BMW Bluetooth functions work, all but the charger with cradle due to mine was built in 3-04. I WAS TOLD I NEEDED A 9-04 an after build date to power up my cradle charger! (Which makes no sense all it need is power tan to it to make it charge my phone)...so I am using the cig. outlet with Motorola RAZR car charger in rear of console instead to charge my RAZR cell! (Such unsightly in a e60 BMW to see black running and hanging wires to charge our cell phones! Next time I will buy an USA car, at least we expect such solutions and answers with our Corvettes, etc. LOL)

Jonathon, I believe with have full functionality with both phone. They are on the BMW approved list (albeit only Cingular) and we have not found a function that does not work. However, I do not know what SMS is, soooo..............................
Glenmal, are you sure? When I tested the Moto mobiles, they did not support SMS functionality. No one else reported that this is supported either.

While Bluetooth® wireless technology is a global standard, there are a variety of profiles that manufacturers can choose to implement in their Bluetooth devices. In certain cases, the BMW hands-free system and the Bluetooth mobile phone do not share the necessary profiles to work together as a hands-free system. For this reason, not all available Bluetooth phones are compatible with the BMW hands-free system. Below you will find a list of mobile phones1 that have passed compatibility testing with the BMW hands-free system.

Could you please publish a scan of this paperwork. I will also send you a PM with my fax number if faxing is easier. Thanks.

The new Moto Q phone is to be released by Verizon. Does anyone know if this phone will be completely compatible with the BMW system?? Are there any resources out there to ge definitive info??
Thanks
Phone book transfer didn't work properly. I'd add contacts to the Q and they didn't show up in iDrive. Others that transferred initially, didn't show up the next day, even though they were still in the phone. Also had problems with some contact phone numbers being garbled in iDrive.
I wasn't impressed with the Q's performance. It locked up several times, the battery meter didn't work (always showed full), menu navigation--and just about every function--is very slow, to name a few. Call sound quality was excellent, though.
I returned it after getting a replacement and having similar issues. Phone book transfer didn't work properly in either one. I don't think any smartphone BT is fully compatible with the BMW BT.

LOL)
Sincerely,
A cleaner solution would be to get the power adapter that plugs into the glove box flash light outlet, that you can plug the Moto car charger into, then it would be in the glove box and out of sight.

Pairs up and works fine in both our 2006 550 and our 2006 X5. I haven't been able to figure out the SMS / MMS yet, but then the phone's freaking owner's manual is 148 pages long! Only anomaly is that the I Drive screen doesn't show the signal strength bars. No biggie.
BTW really, really sweet phone!

The only compatible phone that works with the BMW 5,6,7 series and does not DROP CALLS is the Motorola 550 which is discontinued, it will not allow call waiting ,no phone can anywhere anytime deal with BT call waiting without dropping, This phone will just not drop the call.

The Address Book import took abour 6 minutes, I had about 20 entries.
I also notice that I can't hang up, or press the PTT button or something, the radio will stay locked in PHONE mode, and I have to turn off the phone, or toggle the BlueTooth connectivity on the phone itself to break the connection.
I'm sure I'll know more tomorrow, driving out to Memphis, on a 3 hour trip.

Hi
The P800, P900 and P910 have all had their problems with the BMW BT that we are well aware of. The P990i is soon going to be available with 3G and a range of other goodies. Is anyone aware of whether the Symbian 9.1 OS will be compatible with BMW BT?
Thanks

Has anyone had any luck getting the T-Mobile MDA or Verizon XV6700 to successfully work with their vehicle?
Thanks!
My XV6700 worked fine for calls (but no address book sync) prior to applying the ROM update that enabled direct-push for email.
Since the ROM update, I can't get my phone / car to stay paired: They will usually pair, and then stay connected for a while - (I can make/receive calls, the address book transfers). But eventually the car loses connection with the phone. This usually happens within 15 minutes of pairing, but sometimes it "lasts" longer.
What's crazy is that sometimes the phone completely disappears from the list of paired devices in the car. Argh!

Check the list of phones on the bmwusa website,it's updated fairly often and be sure and read the fine print. While some phones may work, it might not download your phonebook.
Try to pair your phone on the test drive, if it's on the list of approved phones, and if not,go to your carrier and get the correct one,you can pair up to 4 different phones to your car

Initially I was told (by salesman and BMWUSA.com) that my Samsung A900 will not work with my new 2007 550i, but after playing around with it I was able to connect the two. here is how to do it.
Make sure Bluetooth is on from communications menu
Change to screen in communications menu that says "Phone connectable in this menu"
Search for Devices on your cell phone
Enter pin on cell phone
Follow directions to connect the phone in the BMW menu
Now this does not mean that the phone is fully compatible, there are some features that will not work. See issues below
Will not download phonebook, it will attempt but will be stuck at "please wait" screen forever
Will not store any numbers at all, even though you have made calls, so there is no history of calls at all. All Recent dials, recent missed calls, recent incoming calls menus will be blank
will not hangup a call that the other party has not hung up first on
While the issues above are quite serious, I am still very happy that I can use my phone and do not have to switch to "laptop like" Treo (the only offical Sprint phone that is compatible).

Huh? So in two or three years, I'll get another car :D Or I could wait a couple years to get a new car, so I can have the latest options. But then I would have to wait another couple of years for the next set of options. But then I .... oh, nevermind.

What does Barely allows the handsfree mean?
Just returned the Motorola Q phone which worked very well with the bluetooth inmy car, but the batter life on that phone doesn't last enough to be worth keeping. Anyway returned it for a Palm® Treo™ 700w (Verizon Wireless) and all features work except SMS messages. The following problems I have found are
1. I noticed was when I get a phone call the caller I.D. uses the previous number called instead of the actual number calling.
2. The antenna/signal strength display does not show the strength. it only shows a antenna, so am not able to tell what my signal strength is until I look at my phone.
Phone model: Palm® Treo™ 700w (Verizon wireless)
Car model: '07 525i

I need to make a correction on the phone book does not automatically synch to the car, only thing that synches is the speed dials.

Spent couple hours searching online and talking to local dealer about the whole treo compatibility. Had a sprint 650, easy interfacing- but only uses speed dial entries in phone book. Over 6 weeks solid use, had only one or two hiccups.
Took home today a verizon 700p, works essentially identical. Will need more time to assess for glitches, but so far no call dropping (frequently cited complaint in the various internet reports).
Seems to be a recurrent theme for BMW with such simple, common and popular devices (much like my carseat experience). You would think at 60K a pop, some entry level employee could be paid to check compatibility and safety for phones, car seats, and sundry other accessories. I expect glitches in specialty vehicles like a Z4 or perhaps even an M3, not a 5-series wagon. This type of guesswork is what I would expect when buying a domestic car.
Even our 2005 Prius fits a car seat better than the 2006 530xiT (although I ain't about to reclaim it from my wife any time soon...).

I have a 2007 530xi (just 5 days old)
I use a Treo 650.
I am able to pair, no problem.
But it's inconsistent when I leave and return to the car. Sometimes it pairs again on its own, sometimes it doesn't.
Is that an issue with my car or with my phone?

Its an issue with the phone software...I've got the same issue with my Treo.
What I've discovered is that sometimes the phone will turn off the bluetooth function after I turn the car off. If I can't pair - or if I lose connection - I go into my phone and sure enough the "bluetooth" function is unselected. I just reselect it and refresh. Then I pair up again no problem.
I talke with BMW service this Monday and they said that future updates will resolve the pairing issue. But it may be a while...
Hope this helps.

You are able to dial by name using the voice commands from your list of speed dials? I have the same phone/carrier - and can't get the voice command to recoginze the names.

just got the X5 4.4 and paired it with the blackberry 7250. The phonebook syncs up so i can see all the names on the navigation screen but how can i dial a name that starts with let's say "John" without scrolling through 50 screens to get there??
when i use the voice commanc - it says that there is no directory which makes me think that it only recognizes names i "save" to the system.
so is there no way to easily dial names that are programmed into my phone already (unless i want to scroll through hundreds of screens?)

You can always use your phone to dial out using voice dial. As far as your phone is linked via Bluetooth to the X5 your calls will automatically utilize your X5 for handsfree calling.

I updated to the latest firmware (R4EA031) for my W810i. I can make call from the BMW system for the first time without problem, however, when I scroll to the right phone number thru the radio control and push the phone icon to try to make a call, nothing happen after I use the same procedure for the 1st call. I did discounnect the BT and repair the phone and also turn off the phone to reset with no success, what is the problem?

Hi, I have 2006 X5...just paired a new Verizon Motorola KRZR K1m with the car...I do NOT have the Nav system...basic radio. Seems to have gone fine. Curious though, phonebook transfers ok...I spoke to BMW Service and they said I had to manually (voicetag) save up to 50 names in the cars phonebook and then I voice dial with them...NOT with the phonebook of the phone itself. I have done this and it works....but it seems odd...how is it that other posts here seem to show that phones that dont even have voice dialing (treos for example) are able to voice dial from the car without training?....what am I missing????

ThanksYou are missing the high end BMW Computer (CCC).
Your car would seem to have the low computer (M-ASK) and M-ASK does not have the same functionality as the CCC (such as the voice command for your phone book).
EDIT: just noticed you are (for some reason) posting about your X5 in the 5er forum. What I wrote above does not apply to you. You have the much earlier telematics unit known as a ULF which also does not support the functionality you described.

Hey all. Just picked up a Treo 750v to use. I am replacing my TyTn with this unit. So far, love it. It does have a slightly smaller screen, but boy o boy, does Palm know how to tweak the WM5 interface/OS. First of all, it works GREAT!!!! with bluetooth car kits. Paired it with my Parrot CK3100 in my 05 4runner....All the info (Carrier name, Signal, Battery) showed up immediately. No "Network OK" and lack of all other info....
Now for the good news....Same on my 07 530i. Signal and phonebook WORKS without the jetware plugin. I love it. Also, no more random disconnects.
Voice quality is better than the TyTn. Also, setup was a breeze (Treo read the SIM settings). I was connected right away....email, text, everything. Only disappointment is no HSDPA yet in the firmware. Not that I will miss it that much. I only use data for news, email, and the occasional movie showtime. I can definitely wait for the next firmware update....
Anyhow...Just thought I would share. If you have questions, let me know.

4-Series. Nice compilation but let me explain why this is not quite as simple as it seems.
Each phone has a variety of firmware levels and sometimes only certain levels work with the car. On the car side of the house, there are different PROGMAN levels as well and these have a similar impact.
Further, as I have found out while testing upwards of 25 mobiles in the past few weeks, sometimes a mobile will work only to stop working. BMW engineers confirm that this is not unusual and that it is necessary to test a phone-car combination over multiple connection cycles.

All good points. I thought about adding the firmware levels but then I did not have the time or the energy :) I tried to focus on results people posted with recent (most up to date firmwares?) and reasonable recent BMW BT systems (9/05 and later where i could). I just was not able to find a comprehensive list anywhere online and wanted to start one.
I open for suggestions to improve this as i mentioned above and i have a feeling you can add a lot to it  Let me know your thoughts.

I just picked up the new Samsung Blackjack SMARTPHONE (i607) from Cingular and I've been having problems pairing up the phone with the car. My old Cingular RAZR worked flawlessly, but I can't get this one to work. I've been able to get the phone paired with the car where it recognizes it on the idrive screen and on the phone but I can't place a call.
The phone indicates that it's connected to the car via bluetooth, but the idrive screen will say "please wait" for 1-2 minutes.....then nothing. While sitting in my car the Cingular rep transferred the call to the car and it worked over the car's speakers (even then it said "please wait" on the screen, but then quickly transferred back to the phone and we were unable to get it going again. I've played around with the phone for the better part of 2 hours now and I can't get it to transfer the call anymore.
I re-inserted my sim card into my old RAZR and added the device and got everything to pair up just fine.
Can anyone please help me?

I just discovered something very interesting that I thought I would share with the group.
I just got a 2007 530xi (Audi convert... first BMW and I love it!)
My Verizon BB 7130e was working fine with the car, except my address book was only partially loading. I called BMW and they said the limit for the number of entries for the car was 1,500.
I know I was not even close to that, so I was a bit puzzled. Also, my BB had the current and support version of the software.
I looked at the contact in my BB that was directly after the last contact that the car loaded. Interestingly, it was a e-mail group distribution list I created on my BB (not in Outlook).
I renamed the list by putting a ZZ in front of it, so it would go to the end of my address book.
I then got back into the car and the change worked! All the addresses got loaded.
It looks like the BMW software go confused with a group distribution list and stopped.
I hope this helps others out there.
Thanks,
Jeff

I have a 2005 BMW X3 with Ulf and have not had success with my new Cingular 8525, even tried jetwaremobile.com for BT extensions. Anyone know if BMW has bluetooth software upgrade? Why are newer BMW models having more success with the 8525? If not I'm thinking of returning it for a Samsung Blackjack...anyone know if that would pair with my 05' X3?

Blackjack is much worse than 8525. Try updating the firmware by going through www.xda-developers.com. You can upgrade to the HTC 35 build firmware it shoud correct problems. I have an 8525 and, aside from the earpiece volume, it works great using generic HTC firmware. No disconnects. Sends phonebook over automatically.

Just got a 2007 530i and tried my phones with it
Nokia N70: Pairs, but cannot make/receive calls, no contact list.
Sony Ericsson P910i: Pairs, can make/receive calls, but no contact list.
I want to get a Sony Ericsson P990i, but don't want to be a guinea pig. Anyone have luck using a P990i with 2007 5 series (prem, w/no navi)?

I just picked up the new Cingular Pearl 8100 today and paired it up with my '05 525i. I'm proud to say that everything works including the signal strength indicator, address book transfer (Outlook contacts and SIM contacts), and the phone pairs with the car instantly when I turn on the car. From what I've gathered so far, sound quality is better than my old v3 razr through Cingular (according to the callers on the other end).
All in all, I'm very pleased with this phone. I had several issues with my old Treo 650 (Palm) and my Samsung Blackjack (Windows) and so far no problems with the Pearl.

I have a Sprint PCS Samsung A900 (blade) phone.
Does anybody know if this phone works? I saw on BMWs page that very few Sprint phones work but that hasn't seemed to be updated in some time. If this phone doesn't work is there a list of current Sprint PCS phones that do work with a BMW5?

A900 partially works when software version is ZB12 or above. Phone book will not get transfered and you can't end the call without pressing end button on the phone. Samsung M500, M610, and A900M work perfectly fine.

You can upgrade at any Sprint store.
I've just read tons of posts concerning BT with tons of different cell phones. I have a 02, 7 series that has the original 8000 phone. Looks as if I'll be picking up the BTUM module very soon and hope my Sprint BB 8703e will work.
I also need to buy another phone for my wife and am wondering which would be the best one for this system?

I have read some threads and am still a bit confused on the phone situation. I have a 2004 740 with original Cingular TDMA phone which was provided. Local Cingular is telling me I must switch to a GSM phone. They have said any BT phone should work and I have seen on this thread and others list of phones that should work, with Moto RAZR often mentioned. Besides address book feature, I want the phone to be able to “fit” in the housing in center console and have the ability to be charged and connected when used while driving. Local service dept has said there is an adapter that can be purchased for $300 to accomplish this. Is this correct or is there a less expensive way to do this? If this info is posted somewhere else, please refer me.

Phone compatibility is certainly an issue, but one which BMW seems to be progressing for owners of newer cars. I found a PDF booklet on the BMW UK site which covers all models and gives a good overall view. It is in The Owners area as "bluetooth info".
My Sony-Ericsson K750i works perfectly including bringing up the addres book on the i Drive screen of my E60 M5. It keeps itself fully charged and active if plugged into the adaptor in the arm rest, but it also links up just fine if it is in my shirt (vest?) pocket.

There is an adaptor in ARM rest? I have 2006 525i i dont see any in my arm rest. May be only in 2007 models.

Hi--just picked up my '07 525i this week and it seems to be working well with my newly purchased Blackberry Pearl from Cingular. Every time I turn on the engine, the phone asks if I want to accept the Bluetooth connection from the car though which can be pretty annoying when you're runnning errands and jumping in/out of the car a lot. There's an option to turn this off though...I just haven't yet. Just need to figure out the easiest way to turn Bluetooth on/off from the phone so that I can shut it off if necessary in the future. Until then...
Question - how do you continue a call that you started on the Bluetooth system in the car when you want to get out of the car? This came up for me yesterday and I thought that if I turned the car off, it might drop the Bluetooth...it did not. Then I tried to get out of the car...nope. Bluetooth was still working, I couldn't hear a thing on the headset, and I looked pretty silly trying to figure this out in the middle of a mall parking lot! Any tips?
Rocky - to my knowledge, the only way to charge the phone in the car without the use of a standard car charger is through the cradles that BMW offers for select phones. The Razr is one of them (see the Bluetooth page on the BMW website). Since there is no cradle for the Pearl, I just have it plugged in and sitting in the ashtray for the most part. This is helpful as I still have to use the phone for call waiting or to dial a number that it would take FOREVER to scroll to through iDrive.
As for the Bluetooth, it doesn't matter where the phone is...you can stick it in the armrest if you want. It won't fit perfectly, but shouldn't slide too much, I guess. I know that my car has a couple of plugs below the armrest facing the back seat, so I guess you could run the power from there...but that really wouldn't look too nice. So, if you have a Razr and want the phone to be completely integrated, the cradle will probably be the best option. But, there are other ways to get the job done without the adaptor (since most phones out there don't have adaptors available).
Good luck!

I recently upgraded from a Razor to a Treo 650. Everything works great with the 650 and the Bluetooth pairing except for the fact that the phonebook doesn't interface with the system. I do have full control of my phone via the Idrive and steering wheel. I did the software update version 1.13a. You can tell what version of software your Treo 650 has by Press Phone/Send. Press Menu. From the Options menu, select Phone Info. On the Phone Info screen, look for the Software item. If both of the following are true, you need this update: The version number is lower than 1.13a. If it says 1.13a, your smartphone is already updated. The end of the string says SPCS or SPNT. If you see other letters, click here for the appropriate Treo 650 Updater. This did help my phone to some extent; however, it did not solve the phonebook interface problem. You can find the software updater @ http://kb.palm.com/SRVS/CGI-BIN/WEBCGI.EXE/,/?St=95,E=0000000000462044983,K=1314,Sxi=9,useTempl ate=Case.tem,CASE=39902. I will be taking my car in for regular maintanace next week and will also address this issue with my service technician. I will keep you guys posted!

Hi gang,
Just got an 07 530xi last week and have the Motorola Razr. It synched with the car without any problems, downloaded the address book (with multiple numbers per entry) and seems to be working perfectly. I can send and recieve calls and the information shows up in iDrive. Also, the phone automatically connects to the car everytime I get in without me having to do anything. Love it!

Got my new 2007 530 and synced my Cingular TREO 680 at the dealer.
Everything worked so nicely for about a week (including speed dial numbers showing up on iDrive screen).....and then.....it stopped working and althougth the TREO can see the BMW, the BMW can no longer see the TREO.
Any suggestions on how to reset the BMW BT so that I can start over w/ my 680?
Should I revert to TREO 650? Is that working stably now on BMW's?
Thanks for any tips,

To those that recently mentioned treo issues: remove the battery and put it back in. It seems every 4-7 days the interface will stumble- won't call, won't load the phone, etc. My experience has been removing the battery for 2 seconds resets the treo (I had a 650 sprint and now the 700p verizon for 3+ months) and will automatically pair with the car (no need to manually activate phone). Why does this work- I have no clue.

To add the obvious to more of the obvious, I purchased a Samsung M500 from Sprint today, entered all of my contacts and was able to send all to the I-drive address book through Bluetooth transfer.
Unlike the Treo 650 I just downsized from, the M500 uploads all contacts to the car, not just the speed dial entries. And if you have one contact with multiple numbers the M500 can discern each discreet entry.
The M500 is not on the archaic BMWUSA list of phones, but why stick with convention.
Good luck!

1) Auxiliary Power Adapter Part Number 82 11 0 004 073 $9.50
2) Not sure what kind of phone you have. Mine uses a normal USB (small connector version) cable or BlueTooth.
And depending on the phone, Verizon can do some pretty asinine things; on My RAZR V3m, they disable compatibility with Motorola Phone Tools (other than phone book/outlook sync), so I had to go onto some Internet forum and download a bunch of diagnostic/repair type tools to hack those features back into the phone - just so I could add my own ringtones and pictures without using their idiotic service. It worked though, so I'm happy with it, but Verizon are complete jack-:bareass: for screwing with the phones like that.
And if you have a MOTO phone, don't buy the crap Verizon car charger either - get on the WEB and get a Motorola version - that actually fits into the cigarette lighter socket.

I tried Cingular treo 750 (have spent many hours to find the root cause of this problem) and have not been able to make this work seemlessly. When I start the car, the car tries to connect to the phone (it shows waiting... on idrive) but after about 1 minute, the message disappears in idrive. The phone still shows that it is connected to the car. Have tried all possible suggestions given in this forum but had no luck..

I just picked up a new sprint moto razr v3m for my 2007 bmw 530.
These are things that do work with the bluetooth:
1. i am able to pick up the phonebook, in the I drive.
2. i am able to connect when somebody calls me
Heres the strange part. I am allways able to call someone from my phonebook(using I drive, voice command does not work). However 50% of the time when I call out, the call go's thru my phone and 50% of the time it works thru my speakers. Has any one else, had the same problem? Any ideas, on how to fix it.

My Sprint Treo 650 does not work with my '05 545i. The address book doesn't interface. The hands-free aspect of it only works when you initiate a call or answer a call directly from the phone. I don't know if BMW needs to come out with a new software update and/or Palm needs to do a firmware update for the phone. The Treo 650 is an excellent device and I'm confident that resolution will come about soon. I'll keep you posted.
I have a treo 650 (sprint with latest update - I think it is v1.13) that works well but doesn't sync with the 650 phone book - I have over 2k contacts - It does sync with the speed dials though.
I also have a Motorola that syncs with the entire phone book.
My bluetooth mod is the bt9000

Sprint has CDMA whereas some other networks have GSM
GSM is good and better for autos bluetooth

Works great--I like this phone a lot. I live in a 3G area--the reception/voice quality is excellent, and the data transfer speed is fast.

This phone works if you switch off the keyguard also upgrade the firmware to 1.05vz which works great with treo 650. Only the Speed Dials will be transferred to the car, the address book does not upload on the car. This is good enough for me. I have only 10 speed dials on and they all transferred without any difficulty.

Is it my imagination or is the number of compatible phones on the BMW NA site getting smaller and smaller?? I have been in stores for Cingular, Sprint and Verizon and I see NUMEROUS types of phones...I know that they are not all Bluetooth capable, but should there not be more choices on the BMW site???
If someone does not like Blackberry units, then the choices seem pretty limited...
Cheers,

I have know just recieved a 30 day phone exchange. I traded back my new sprint moto razr, for a new samsung m500. The samsung m500, works much better. The whole phone book, comes up in the, I-drive display. I am able to make and recieve all phone calls. I am having some problems with the voice activation system. This is probably more due to my speech style and natural tone. I will need to practice with the voice activation system. If you have sprint service, the samsung m500, is unfortunately, one of few choices, that will work well, with Bmw's built-in bluetooth.

off topic a little, but the sprint trejo 700WX works but does not transfer phone books...everything else is pretty good. Also a question, why do some phones (i.e razor) work for Verizon cingular etc but not for Sprint ? Is this the CDMA thing?
I glad to hear about the success with the Cingular 6102i. I use a T-Mobile 6103, which I believe is the identical phone. I'll be taking the phone with me, of course, to Munich for my ED in a few weeks. Does anyone have experience with the 6103?
