Hello,

I am new here and I need some help. I am looking to get a used 99-01 BMW 540I 6 spd sport pkg. What would be a reasonable price for one with under 75000 miles? I check with Kelley Blue Book a 2000 with the things I listed would cost $22K. is that the true market price? My budget it to stay somewhere between $17-$23K.

Anyway with the 540i's what should I lookout for as far as problems with the car? Is there anything I need to know before buying one? Your help is greatly appreciated. :)

I think you can find a nice one for the lower part of the range between blue book trade in and retail market prices. perhaps around 20k? Look for a car that has been well maintained by a fanatic...

Radiator usually goes around 60,000, oil pump bolts need to be checked to see if their loose. Both easy fixes...do a search

I think you are in the ballpark as long as you dont live in north Florida.

This is funny and irritating at the same time. I'm in the same boat but I haven't found many and have gotten no where with the few I have found. I had run across one '99 540 (62k miles) at a local dealer marked at a whopping 26,999.

For lack of anything else, I mentioned Kelley as a reference. The SA made the customary trip inside to "see what they could do", he returned with they keys and a figure of 24,500. I also got a free dissertation from the sales guy about the evils and inaccuracies of the Kelley Blue Book, Edmunds, and other online price guides. The car they had couldn't be certified but I was assured they had all the records since it was a trade from a local customer. He also pointed out they had more than that 22,500 in the car so "I was getting a good deal today". Sure. They lost me right there.

I drove it anyway and examined the car every which way possible while they checked my car out. Just for giggles, I made an offer of 22,000 thinking they just may just give me more than what my trade it worth. Suprisingly, I then find myself sitting in the office of the guy who "runs the numbers" while he bangs away at a calculator, only the sheet of paper he's working on has 24,500 written atop.

When I questioned how they derived how much they were giving me on trade, he actually pulls up Kelley's website as a reference  to show me I was getting an impressive 300 over what I could expect. Of course I already knew what to expect, I'd gone through this excersise a half dozen times in recent months.
