Finally fixed the "condensation" problem....
ArtZ8 formerly known as ArtX5 sold me his slightly used Mobile Innovations-modified Angel Eyes headlight unit. (They used E39 5-series headlamp parts to add the angel eyes system to the X5 headlight unit)

Finally got them put on and voila, no condensation despite rain this past Saturday night and SNOW this Sunday morning!!

I live about 3600 feet above sea level and the snow level got down to 2500 feet and it was cold this morning for SoCal standard (31 F). Heard Big Bear Lake got about 3 feet by Sunday morning.

As all the easties and north-westers already know, the pre-X-drive X5 does well in the snow (I mean that is why we got the AWD right?) :D

Finally got test out the Pirelli Scorpion Zero all-season high-performance (Z-rated & M+S)....drove through unplowed roads with over 1 feet of snow like a hot knife through butter!! DSC helps....tried out HDC on some of the slippery downward slope....did "skidpad testing" at my office parking lot with and without DSC (aka "donuts") ;)

Again, a big thanks to Art for all his help!!

WOW! Impressive pics. This will be my first NJ winter with my 2002 X5. I'm pretty sure the MY02 did NOT have X-Drive, correct? Do I assume from your below comments that X-Drive does not do quite as well in snow as the pre X-Drive, regular all-wheel drive X5's do??? I'm currently looking for a winter tire/wheel set up to replace my 18" sport package wheels and Michelin tires. They look like they won't be too goo in snow. We get paved pretty quick here after a storm but I like to seek out un-paved roads ahead of the plows for fun. Can't see the stock Michelins being able to handle this.

Enjoy the pics....

Excellent pics, Charles. For the miles you've put on your X5, she looks outstanding!!

I love it Doc! The first snow pics to be posted and they are from SoCal  That is unreal how much snow you got in your area. That storm must have slowed down. We were supposed to get t-storms yesterday, but got nothing. Glad to see you finally addessed that headlight problem. Nice pics btw, did you get a new camera, or is that the old one? Thanks again for the v24 upgrade cd!! I am jealous btw, I would LOVE to take my X out for a spin in the snow. I guess I could always take a drive up to Flagstaff.

I've been putting off getting my snows on - looks like I better not wait much longer!

I think the X-Drive does better in the snow, and I base that solely on the fact that it is new, and I have it!

Oh, you should also get some snows. Whether you get some rubber for you 18s or an entire set of rims w/ tires, you'll be happy you did if you like to go looking for fun! Most any of the 18" snow tire choice will do you well. I drop down to 17s in the winter 'cause I'm looking for the best possible snow grip--living in the back country makes it a necessity.

Happy driving! :D

Correct. X-Drive first appeared on the MY04's. See this article for more details - http://www.janixworld.com/x5/misc/X5%20xdrive.pdf

Wow, that's a lot of snow. The kids here'd be out of school for days with that kind of white stuff.

I like the snowy pics. Very nice Charles. I didn't know you guys get snow over in the SoCal area. Love the AEs. I've had mine for almost 3yrs now and they've survived all of the crazy rain and snow here in the NJ/NYC area.

Having lived in Philly for several years in the 90's (especially during the Storm of '94) has given me tons of experience in driving in snowy/icy conditions. Back then, I had an E30 325i (rear-wheel drive only) and had Blizzaks.....no electronic traction control....just added 200 lbs of sandbags in the trunk.

My comment re: xDrive was meant to state despite our "lower tech" AWD system, the pre xDrive system does fine in the snow.

I agree that if you live in an area the snows quite of bit, definitely get snows for all 4 tires with smaller wheels.....Back on my E30 325i, I had 15" hi-perf tires for the spring/summer/fall, then 14" stock wheels for the snows (wow, my wheel size changed). ;)

Yes, Southern California is great that you can go skiing in the mountains and go to the beach on the same day! :bigpimp:

Where I live, it sometimes gets a dusting of snow (2-3 inches at most) and then I can drive up a road about 5 miles be at 5000 feet where they usually get about 1-2 feet of snow. Of course, both Lake Arrowhead & Big Bear Lake which is 6000 feet+ can get 3-4 feet of snow (local mountain community which has skiing about 45 min. away). :)

We just had a freaky weather storm which was unusual.

The funny thing is that I can drive down the hill go west about 8 miles or so and be in the next town which is only 1200 feet in elevation and they didn't even get a drop of snow.

The snow is still all over the place on my block, but will probably melt in a couple of days or so because we'll have 60F sunny weather. :(

Greg: yes got a new camera over the summer, the Canon S500 (5 megapixel camera)
Gr8wall: thanks for the info re: MI's Angel Eye durability :D
UCrew: well, I had 290K on my E30 325i before I departed with it 1.5 years ago. I'll keep running the X5 until the wheels fall off
