Coolant light went on today and I was wondering what type of coolant BMW uses. There are some cars now with coolant that lasts for a long time while others use the standard type which you replace every other year.

I have been trying to research this. I have found that BMW's require phosphate free coolant, but not sure what the differences are beyond that. I know it's blue.

I guess the best thing is to buy BMW coolant to be safe, however it is expensive.

It it is just a little low, try adding some distilled water to top it off.

BMW's coolant spec is called N 600 69.0. There are aftermarket ones out there, though.

The stuff isn't cheap ($12-18/gal from the stealer) but some suspect that the cooling system failures some people have (busted radiator necks, etc.) might be the result of using different coolant.

Just paid $22.99 for a gallon at my BMW dealer. I don't have a BMWCCA discount.

I just paid $15.26 with my BMWCCA discount for one container. It listed for $17.95.

BMW claims it is NAP-free (nitrate-, amine-, and phosphate-free). I've taken apart an E30 that ran off-the-shelf green glop, and it had significant pitting in the cooling system housings. Correlation, not cause and effect, but for $14 a jug (Eurasian) once a year...

I see the references to NAP-free all the time. But Motul, for example, has 2 coolants, both NAP free, one of which is spec'd for BMW, the other (an OAT) is not. :dunno:
