BMW Extended Warranty Options

I'm thinking about buying a new 3-series and had some questions about the extended warranty offered by BMW (to 100k miles).

1) Is it better to purchase it now, or wait until the warranty is almost out in several years?

2) Does BMW offer a warranty that covers everything the standard warranty does for parts and labor (ex. electrical glitches, interior trim, window regulators)?

3) Is it just a two year warranty to 100k miles (no point in calling it a 100k mile warranty unless you drive 50k miles a year)? Is there an option for a warranty that goes to 100k miles and covers realistic driving habits as far as the time goes?

1) Since you can buy the warranty any time while the car is still under the original warranty there is little point in spending the money on the warranty when the car is new. Consider this; If you get into an accident a year after purchasing it that is severe yet not large enough to have your car totalled and you all of a sudden want to get rid of your car to get a new one you'd be out the money for the warranty. Sure, it's transferrable but you'll never recover what you paid for it. Also, if after 3 years you want a new car because BMW has a killer deal going on some car you're out of luck there as well.

Also, you don't have to buy the warranty from the dealer that sold you the car. You can buy it from any BMW dealer. I'm sure the board sponsored dealers here will be more than happy to cut you a good deal when you're ready.


2) As had been stated previously, it's better than the CPO warranty and should be exactly as you stated in your question. If you do a search there's a link from sometime this summer that talks specifically about the new warranty program. In it all the exclusions were mentioned

3) The warranty itself is an extension of the original warranty. It extends the 4/50 warranty to 6/100 from the in-service date.

The main reason why I would stay away from purchasing the warranty when the car is new is because if you trade the car in it loses it's warranty. It's only transferrable if you sell it to a third party. Makes no sense to me to buy it now if you don't know what you or your car will be through in the next 4 years / 50000 miles.

As long as you're the original owner and still under the original warranty....

Not quite true.

BMW does offer an extended warranty cost is rather expensive, but does give coverage similiar to a CPO warranty. Price will depend on the car.

Another alternative is a third party warranty. United Auto Group has a warranty as good, if not better than the BMW program. Cost is a little less.

I must have been on vacation and missed the thread. That is kind of cool, but it does raise the same question for me as the maintenance. I don't drive my car that much and I will be well under 50K at 4 years so I am really paying for the time and not the miles which will make it kind of expensive. I know its not the same but for example, my Honda Pilot which I drive alot came with a 3/36 warranty and it was about to run out so I extended the warranty to 6 years/100K with no deductible for $1100. Granted it is a Honda but it is 4wd and it has the DVD entertainment system and it started with only a 3/36 warranty. Did you find out what the dealers on this site are selling the warranty to members for?

For my maintenance extension I used Ted from Carbone. He's not there any more but they're still a board sponsor and their banner appears on the top once in a while and it contains the name of Ted's replacement. I would also inquire from Sarafil whose a frequent contributor to this board.

Only you know if the extended warranty is equitable for you and is a decision that you will make when the time comes.

If you do decide to buy the warranty, buy it from an out of state dealer so that you won't be charged sales tax by them. Remember, that in this case it is incumbent upon you to pay for the sales tax in your own state ;)
