we had sleet, then snow, and then it froze over in st.louis last night.

perfect conditions to get accustomed to how the 325xiT handles the ice; and more interesting --> on the same roads, i drove our sports useless vehicle (AWD.......2002 bravada with rear differential, no DSC).

braking was pretty hairy in the SUV, as the truck skidded to and fro and required mucho steering input to stay straight. also: i stopped in the middle of icy hills. there was a lot of noise as first the rear wheels slipped, i could hear the rear diff. kick in and whale the tail about and then the center diff. would transfer the power to the front wheels. wow. it got going, but after much drama and noise and wheelspin.

DSC-X: amazing. holy cow. the 325xiT stopped straight as an arrow (both vehicles on all season touring tires). when i whipped the car around an icy corner, DSC cut in so quickly i didn't even have to countersteer. and when i stopped the car in the middle of an icy incline --> the car just crabbed up the hill. no drama.

and so: i've come away very impressed. many have scolded bmw xi as not true AWD because of a lack of differentials and so forth, but those people probably also haven't truly tested this system. it's amazing. and i almost want an SUV with DSC. we used to own a jeep cherokee and that also was very unstable braking and putting power down on icy roads. fishtailed like crazy!

Similar results here in PA on Monday morning. I was very pleased with how the xiT not only went but how it stopped. Even tried the HDC, it worked well but just need to get used to the sounds and slight "bucking" when the system engages and releases. It did work well though on an unplowed descent to my liking and remained very stable.

I was - OH SO CLOSE - to going for gray green, but opted for silver 2002 325xiT. I'm curious -- do you have pix? I still think it would have been a great xiT color..........

just curious.

i think the conti's are so much better than i thought they would be. but once again, this isn't exactly a bahnstormer of a car....so i'm not actively testing limits of adhesion in the dry roads all of the time.

Still have stock tires on, which are Goodyear RSA's. A lot of units are now coming in with them. Made in Germany imprinted so I guess they were available at good $ and proximity.

Will have pics soon. Need to clean off the first round of winter mess and borrow a digi cam. Too cheap to buy one right now (especially since just made a big down payment on recent purchase;) ). In my opinion it is a great color for the xiT. I especially like that 1) it does not show dirt/grime as much as the darker colors 2) will be easier to maintain 3) it has an almost chameleon effect - changes hue depending on sunlight, etc.

I have the same tires on my 2002 325i. Really not too bad. I don't feel the need for an immediate upgrade.

 I don't know why, but DSC hasn't gone on in my 325xi yet...ever.

It's never come on while driving on dry pavement, which i attributed to the all wheel drive and reasonably grippy eagle rs-a tires.

I was trying to test it out this afternoon in a parking lot with sheets of ice. While i could get the car to slide while turning, and the ABS turned on during hard braking, the DSC light never came on.

So there are two possibilities: 1. DSC is for some reason not working in my car, in which case i'll take it to the dealer, and 2. DSC may be functional but the light doesn't seem to be working (i did have to correct steering while sliding on the ice, so this seems unreasonable).
Anyone have similar problems...?

I find that the DSC light does not come on unless the car is BRAKING a wheel. If it is simply cutting power, I get no light. The difference in handling is night and day with DSC off, though. For spirited driving, I can't stand DSC. It's nice to have on when you're just lazing about town, though.
