 Darn... 12k miles and one tire is damaged beyond repair from a nail. Actually the tire shop guys said that I must have run on it because the inside is whitish on half the tire; according to them it indicates rubber damage therefore requiring a new tire. Not sure I trust them though... It didn't look that bad to me and there is no visible deformation on the outside of the tire.

I measured the other front tire and I have 9/32” in the center and 7/32” nearer the edge. So...

1. Do you think the tire shop trying to pull a fast one?
2. Should I shave a new tire? (Bridgestone RE040 is listed as starting with 10/32”) if so... to what depth should I shave my new tire down to?

I would buy a matching tire instead of shaving a new one.

Matching tire... You mean used? Any luck with that sort of thing? I guess I am just too paranoid to get a used tire.

Actually I want to buy a new set of tires... but early in the fall before the rains start. So I want to squeeze miles out of this set.

3/32nds isn't much difference to *have* to get a new tire shaved IMO. For example Audi recommends tires be within 4/32nds of each other for their quattro cars.

Roadstergal means buy a pair of tires.. Another new one to match the new one you are buying.. That way, you have the same amount of tread on that axle (so to speak).

At a much higher cost comapred to buying a single tire and shaving.

True.. but, if your front and rear tires wear at different rates, then at least you have the chance of getting full use out of those two tires... If you buy one, and shave it, then you are paying for whatever tread that you've shaved off..

Also, if you buy two, you now have an extra good tire that can be used, if another goes bad...

If I were selling the car, shaving a new tire would be a cheap way to solve the problem... Not sure it saves any money in the long run, even though cheaper initially.

But, I agree with Gary... If he still has 9/32nds left on the remaining tire... I'd just buy a new one and be done with it..

Well I went and got a single Bridgestone RE040 from TireRack. No problems there.

I had it installed at Custom Alignment in Mountain View, CA. Great place, Great people. Really happy with the service. Not the fastest or cheapest place in the world but… I would rather have it done right instead of fast & cheap. I got a lot of useful information from Kevin who installed my tire.

I had it installed without shaving. I can't tell the difference.

Ready for summer. Already shopping for another set since I will need a new set by fall for sure!

Thanks for the advice and comments everyone!
