: X5 4 spoke steering wheel $80

I have a 2000 X5 steering wheel, 4 spoke style, without airbag. Bought to upgrade my 99 528 (build 9/98) but it didn't fit. I beleive they changed the wheel for E39 built 03/99 and up and this will work.

It's thicker than stock E39 wheel, the same size as the sports steering wheel.

$70 shipped.

What is it about the X5 steering wheel that does not fit your E39?

Is the difference the airbag and multifunction bits or the splines on the wheel?

If it is the splines, try and get back to me ASAP. You can try me at both these two emails: david.tang@rogers.com and at david.tang@gowlings.com.

It's sold, but FYI, the center mount does not have a flat key spot that only on the pre 03/99. But it should fit the E39 produced after that date.

Thanks. When you say the central mount, you mean the centre hole with all of the teeth, right?

Also, did the E39 airbag and switches fit into the steering wheel? Are they the same size and shape? I gather the electrical connections may be different.

Thanks. I'm looking to do the exact same thing.

Yes, the center hold is different, they changed it early in 1999. If you found a steering wheel later than 03/99 from X5, everything should connect up correctly.

I saw your question on E39 Yahoo forum also and realized that you have (or going to have) a 2003 IT, that has even a newer 3 spoke steering with the round airbag, to be safe, you might want to find a wheel produced after 01/2001.

But before you swap it, drive it for a while, you might get used to it. People with E39 4 spoke wheels have been "upgrading" to the 3 spoke sports wheel like yours, so there's must be a good reason to keep it.
