Yeah, if they get rid of the thick metal ledge over the kidneys and made the front spoiler look a little more ZHP'ish it would be sweet!

That's the active speed control sensor. On the 330 only I believe.

That ledge is really the only thing that I really don't like. Everything else looks pretty good. Being a taller person having the car grow a few inches is even appealing.

Yeah, maybe BMW will ditch the ledge during the 2007 model facelift.

That would be good, but will they ditch it on the E90 M3? I hope so!

What's up with you people? That "ledge" looks killer. What's wrong with a bit of artistic design flair? It looks awesome. Did you see the comparison of the e90 and the e46? The kidneys on the e46 look 2002ish in comparison - yes, that bad... The tail lights are great too, it's sweet the way they follow and extend the curves of the car from different angles. It might not be as sporty sharp as the e46, but it is tasty and classy. I can't wait to see one in person.

I don't like it because the kindney grills are usually a squarish, rectangular, oval shape and they are always complete. On the E90 the kidney grills are actually shaped like this: UU, and the crome strips on the hood just make it look like they are complete. I would have rather the grills looked more like the E60 or like the larger face lifted grills of the E46 coupe or sedan. I'm sure it will look good in person though, no car is 100% perfect.

I suppose BMW could have extended and completed the kidneys up a bit and notched the hood. Not sure how that would look though. Probably not bad if the hood and grills meet very flush with tight tolerances.

They could've made the just a bit smaller, or built them into the hood like the E46. The way they are, the Euro license plate fits perfect right underneath them though.

A benefit to not having the kidneys come down as part of the hood is that it reduces the risk of damaging the hood in a slight accident involving the nose of the vehicle.
I suspect the main reason was was cost of manufacture.

Yeah but it looks so good that way, I think it's worth the risk! Building the grills into the hood definitely would cost more though, I guess that's why. :(

Is it possible that the metal ledge was incorporated/designed to make it easier to open the hood, seeing that the kidney grills are now not part of the hood? :dunno:

I think Herr Bangle would say something like "It's our post-past interpretation of the kidney" :)
I don't think what they're doing is cheaper than the e46 design - did you see the video, that's simply a plastic grill shoved into a hole in the hood - it takes them about 0.2 sec to assemble that. The new one is obviously more complex. I suppose you could talk about the complexity of folding the hood, but that seems irrelevant to me - no different from producing any other panel. It's not to save cost - it's to break out of the mold - just something new, that's all.
