Hello everyone,

I noticed on a BMW product bulletin that the 05 X3 is to have chrome window surrounds, is this true? I have looked at a few 05's and did not notice this change?

Are there any 05 X3 owners that do have this feature?

Thanks.

Jeff

My 2005 Canadian spec X3 3.0I has chrome grill slats as well as chrome ledges for front and rear windows. From what I gather, any 3.0I manufactured after 10/2004, has these chrome additions, which are not available on the 2.5I.

Are there any other X3 owners out there that can verify this?

My 2005 was delivered last week (has a December 2004 build date) and it does NOT have the chrome around the windows.

This is a typo. BMW has confirmed no chrome for 2005.

Mine has chrome :p

Obviously there is some debate regarding the build date = chrome theory both here and on the other forums, but its odd why BMW would offer different trim for some and not the others. Many 3.0L customers that I have read of, are calling their dealers on it (since it is in the brochure) and are having their black trim pieces swapped out at no charge. Others are being told, as above, that it was merely a typo, and that no upgrade will be given at no cost.

I must be one of the lucky ones. Will post a picture of my Mocha (not avail in US either) as soon as the snow clears up :)

BMWNA sent out a bulletin to all US dealers last week explaining that the 2005 US-spec model will not have chrome trim at any point in the model year, and that it was a typo. Canadian spec cars might (and probably are) different in some areas such as the trim and detail work.

I was visiting a few different dealers this weekend and NONE of the 2005 X3's have the chrome trim. But check out the bmwusa web site and build an X3, it shows the chrome on the photos????

Any idea why this is?

Did you miss my post above? There is an error in the literature-- BMW is not putting chrome trim on any of the 2005 models.

Since it appears that the chrome window sills and grill pieces are not available in the US, maybe someone can identify and post the part numbers for ordering from BMW or aftermarket elsewhere and retrofitting.

Here are two part numbers I sourced from the Roadfly forums. They were not labeled, and as such, I don't know which is for which. Both fall under the label of "Grill" and I'm not sure if the grill has two pieces, or if one number is for the grill, and the other for the chrome window sills. Take them to your dealer, or perhaps someone else on the forum can clarify:

51-12-3-414-904
51-12-3-414-903

Hope that helps.

calgaryx3,

What is the production date of your X3?

Jeff

Jeff,

I'm not entirely sure of the production date, since I wasn't privy to that information when I placed my order on December 31 2004. At that time, I was advised that it was "in transit" from Austria.

Hope that helps!

Asif,

There are a few ways that you can check on the build date. Check the door this will identify the month and year, also it appears that you can register your vehicle through the bmw.ca web site (looks similar to the owners circle here in the US) this may also give you the production date.

Jeff,

Thanks for your help.

It appears that production date on my X3 was 09/04.

Hope that helps!

Here's how much attention I pay to non-performance aspects of my cars - not 10 minutes ago I pulled my new X3 3.0 into the garage and parked it - and I couldn't tell you without going back out there if I have chrome around my windows or not. I DID happen to glance at the paperwork and saw that my car had originally arrived at the New Jersey VPC on 11/04/2004. Didn;t dig for a build date, but I must have just made the cutoff for the updated cd player that cna play MP3 files, because mine can.
Next time i drive it I'll try to remember to check for the chrome :D :D

You won't have it. No US spec cars have it for 2005.

I have a Canadian X3 3.0 and I have the chrome lower surround. My build date was Jan 05 I think.

I know my Canadian vehicle has both chrome kidney grills and the window base chrome.

I also notice that if you build an X3 3.0i on the U.S. site - the vehicle that appears for sure has both items illustrated in chrome. Maybe the U.S. site is using a template international standard image for the 3.0i - but not offering that option.

I'll say it again. There will be no chrome on any of the 2005 X3s. I don't know what all the bulletins say, or what the pictures on various websites say, but BMWNA has said to dealers that THERE WILL BE NO CHROME WINDOW TRIM OR KIDNEY GRILLES FOR ANY 2005 X3s SOLD IN THE US.

I think everyone realizes that - from the previous comments.

The point is 'some' BMW publications and their own web site - 'build your BMW' illustrations for the 3.0i, show otherwise.

There wouldn't be any confusion if they didn't.

Well after reading this thread, seeing the pictures, and looking at some sweet X5 4.8is at my dealer's parking lot (they are the only ones with the same type of chrome grille that the X3 was supposed to get), I broke down and bought the chrome grille inserts for my wife's brand new Highland Green 2005 X3 3.0 and man do they look sweet. I never realized how much I disliked the standard plain black plastic grilles until I had the new ones installed. I intially attempted to install them myself but after taking out a few screws and looking at the assembly, I chickened out. The dealership threw them in 10 mins and charged me $43 (ouch). Hopefully I can recup some of the losses by selling my old grilles on eBay... BTW, if anyone is interested, they can be found for sale here: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=7963911629&rd=1&sspagename=STRK%3AMESE%3AIT

Anyhow, if anyone has a site to host them, I'd be happy to email them some pics so that they can post them in this forum (unfortunately I didn't do any "before" shots, but everyone knows what the original grilles look like anyway).

Oh, and if anyone else is interested in getting the chrome ones, the actual part numbers are 51-13-3-414-903 and 51-13-3-414-903 (the numbers listed above are each off by 1 digit). However don't expect to be getting them anytime soon as apparently one of the units has been back-ordered for like forever (perhaps the elusive reason why BMW opted not to go this route with the 2005 models). The only reason I was able to get them was that the great folks at Circle BMW were able to locate the only dealership in the US that still had both grilles in stock.

You're right about the production numbers.
I received today a brand new set of chrome kidney grilles that I spotted on EBay. They are really nice! By the way they are still injection molded parts made out of plastic with a chrome metalization. I have to wait for the car now. It's on order! X3 3.0i Black Saphire; Premium package; cold package; Nav Sys; premium sound; Sand Beige leather light wood trim and more...

Just for info purposes here's what the chrome kidney grills looked like on my Canadian-spec 3.0i. They come standard up here.

And here's a pic that shows the lower surrounds:

They really enhance the look of the car IMHO, especially when your car's black.

Good question! Actually it is very interresting! Yes, it's chromed too in the back but they also added a small ring on each opening which is not chromed but black. They are snapped onto the kidney grille to =smooth the edges nicely. I don't know if you can tell fron the pictures below.

it looks like the brown X3 on the first page of this thread has the grills chromed on the sides, I still cant tell from the ones you posted pics of. I placed an order on e-bay for those also. I see the black rings. If you can, can you give me an angle from the side looking at the front of the grills? I am very curious now!! Either way, they look much better than the stock ones!! I also like the X5 grills that are kind of silver looking too.

The sides are chromed as well. The grills are so bloody shiny that it's difficult to get pictures which aren't decieving!

Sorry I can't take pictures now; I am on a business trip for a few days without my camera! Your concern is legite. Don't worry! What I can tell you is that you don't see those rings from any angle when you look from the exterior side of the Kidney grille. That is because the rings are very shallow and the draft goes on the opposite direction from the parting line. Anyway the chrome on either side of each strip looks very dark; almost black! Probably because the chrome projected normally to the face doesn't grasp as well on the sides even though the plastic is corroded so that it is less slippery. Enough technical verbiage; here is the link to the Swedish company which came up with the process called Plastal (Metalization on plastics); it's also the name of the company! I found out because the name is engraved on the parts. Their credentials in the automotive industry are impressive, check it out! www.Plastal.com (http://www.Plastal.com)

I finally found some pics of the chrome on the outside of a canadian X3. I don't really see what the fuss is about. I actually like the black better. I love the chrome around the 330ci (especially if the car is white). Just my preference. :)

I think I prefer the satin silver grills like the X5 4.8is rather than the chrome, see attached. Some guys over on RoadFly I believe had a painting procedure to duplicate this effect.
