For what it's worth, I've got one. It really doesn't do a *lot* on BMWs.
I mean, it'll retrieve all of the ODB2 stuff.. you can see intake temp, coolant temp, etc.. but BMW only passes enough information from its own computer interface to the ODB2 port as legally required to be compliant.
I had a coil pack go out in my 330i. The engine ran very rough and the service engine soon light came on. Plugged in the odb2 reader - it said everything was 100% fine..
