View Full Version : What effect does tire choice have on tramlining?

I recently switched the wheel/tire combo on my 2002 M3.

Previously: Stock 18" wheels with stock sized Michellin Pilots

Now: Stock 19" with Bridgestone S-03's - 245/35/19 front, 275/30/19 rear. These tires are used and almost dead. They also had a couple track days on them.

I'm currently experiencing a lot of tramlining, a large increase from the previous setup.

I'd like to know what factors effect tramlining and which is the main contributor. Is the brand of tire the main factor? Is tire width a contributor(these are upsized)? Perhaps the main reason is wheel alignment?

Obviously the stickier compounds are going to be more prone to follow road imperfections, and I am not willing to step down to a less aggressive compound. I just want to know how I can reduce the tramlining given that constraint.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

I don't have an answer to what makes one tire tramline more then the other but I can tell you the SO3's tramline like crazy and the Pilots do as well.

The contisport (crappy tires) and contisport2's (excellent tires) don't tramline nearly as much.

Not that this is a surprise but contitourings hardly tramline ...

You can start from here: http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tiretech/general/tramlining.jsp

The degree of tramlining varies among tires. You just happened to pick one which is notorious for this. My Toyo T1-S has very minimal tramlining and also very good traction.

i also experience some noticable trembling when i upgraded my 16s with 17s, i think the tires have a lot to do with these. is there any of you run falken tires ? how are they compared with more expensive counterparts ?
