any idea if the U.S. will get the 255hp or 218hp 3.0ltr?

Knock off 175 lb to get to US-appropriate weights, though. That's 2890 lb. There's no switch that gets flicked from "unacceptable" to "unacceptable" at 3,000 lb, and compared to other cars in its class, the 1,400 kg DIN (EU) weight is quite competitive:
Golf R32: 1,550 kg
Alfa 147 GTA: 1,385 kg (3-door only)
Audi A3 3.2: 1,525 kg
Even the "lightweight" Focus RS, a car at least one generation down in terms of safety and stiffness, clocks in at 1,300 kg.

E36 M3 was heavier and less powerful :dunno:
And if andy's math is right, it's just 25lbs heavier than the E30 M3.
And it will get better fuel economy than either

I agree that there's no magic switch at 3,000 pounds. The switch is located somewhere closer to 2,600. :p

The E36 M3 doesn't matter in this context. The E30 is closer, IMO. The published curb weight was 2867 (1300kg), but as was pointed out, published curb weights and reality don't always match. For instance, the published curb weight of my RX-8 is 3,029. My RX-8 tripped the scales (with ~6 gallons of gas, which is more than 1/3 of a tank) at 2,888 pounds.

6.2 seconds to 100km/h? That's equal to the e90 330i times, which is bigger and heavier. Strange. Must be geared differently or tuned differently...

Yeah that doesn't make sense. the silly zhp does 0-60 in under 6 seconds and it's saddled with at least 200-300 more lbs. something seems off with the numbers listed...or as you said, the gearing is off.

It may be just a conservative figure. I can't imagine the 1 series would have taller gearing than the 3 series, that would be . . . odd.

BMW always plays their performance times very conservatively. You can count on real-life times of at least .5 sec quicker in general, and sometimes more when comparing to a pricier model...
Don't want to make the new 3 look slow, right?
