Just bought a 1988 318i and don't know a thing about BMWs. It's in great condition, but the speedometer, odometer & trip odometer don't work. All of the other gauges are fine. I noticed the speedometer is electronic. Starting with the most simple, is it possible that this is a blown fuse? If so, where is the interior fuse box? I've looked everywhere. If not, any advice on where to start? I live in Naples, Italy, and would rather not go to a shop if I don't have to. Thanks.

Sounds like a fuse to me. Make sure to check out any shorts ie cigarette lighter and such.

It should be a 30 amp fuse in the fuse box located right above the driver side engine bay.

Hope this helps

Rick,
Thanks. I'll check it out. So, there is not a fuse box inside the car?

There's no diagram on the lid of my fuse box. Is there anywhere to find a diagram online? Also found something telling me to check the connections on the speed sensor on the differential. Another uniformed (dumb :) question: the differential is the front transaxle...rear axle?

Found the speed sensor. Connections were bad. Cleaned and reconnected. Speedometer works fine. Thanks.

this is for an e30m3, but still a good guide...

did you locate this using the manual, or is there an online source?

FYI for anyone else who stumbles on this thread regarding a broken odometer... if it just plain doesn't work, then the sensor on the diff might fix it. however it is also a common problem that it works only intermittently, in which case it is probably the gears in the dash. bavarian auto just included a DIY for this in a recent newsletter.

My power windows and sun roof work when they feel like it, any suggestions? (1993 BMW 316i European)
