Who make the best intake?
ECIS vs. Conforti intake.
I heard that ECIS is a Conforti ripoff.
What do y'all think?

All CAIs are really a "no tech" item. There are even webpages out there how to build your own from parts at a hardware store.
Yes, I know you can get a fancy CF one from Dinan but other than that it's a tube with an airfilter on the end.
Losing the factory box and getting better airflow is what it's all about. I've seen both the Conforti and ECIS at the racetrack.
They seem to work about the same and the owners will agree.
If you want references I can point you to owners of both who will agree. I heard that the ECIS ones had some fitment probs on some models and take some garage engineering to fit properly.
I've had an ECIS for about a year and it's great. No fitment problems

I would be interested in posts that show how to make a CAI especially if they include heat shields.
I agree they are all about unrestricted air flow and I always thought it would be relatively easy to make one for far less than the $3-500 price tag.

Don't think 31st330i has completed that yet. Kaz and I helped him along with some small details too. In any case, Kaz and I gathered some numbers from the OBD II software a few weeks ago with stock airbox, Dinan CF and Dinan AL.
We are planning another testing day for ECIS, Conforti Shark etc...

this bothers me.
if you go to www.eurosportacc.com, click on "online catalog", then click on "engine".
you will see a product called "eurosport cool-flo ITG" cold air induction.
and it was on the market for about a year and a half before Jim Conforti came to market with his. granted the whole ITG filter tech. is from racing programs, but if you think about timing, both ECIS and JC looked at the VW products and just applied them intelligently to BMWs.

Vince,
I would be very interested in hearing the results of your intake testing day. Where are you located? I would be more than willing to help the cause with my '02 330Ci.
I'm also interested in the results of your (31st's) custom intake.

Just for the record. I didn't really buy that statement made by a local tuner. I think he was trying to convince me to get the Conforti over the ECIS
I do like the ITG filter though, but I can get the ECIS for ~40% less money.
If they really are all about the same. I think ECIS is the best value.

T, no problem. Send me an email (vpwseah@nettaxi.com) and I will keep you posted. So far, Kaz, Hack, Sergio and I are looking for a good place and time to test out.
Mostly likely in the Irvine or LA area. More towards Irvine though cos there was where Kaz and I tested anyway.
The custom intake is not yet produced, I think. But over the last few weeks I have read and gathered useful information with regards to importance of air intake temperature, pressure, turbulence/laminar flow, Bernoulli's equation application, head losses, ram-air effect etc... If you're interested in the technical side, Kaz and I will be glad to feed you the info.

Vince,
Irvine would be great, only 45 min. from my house in Encinitas.
I'll send you an email requesting the tech. info. I'm not sure how much help I will be, but I am interested.
Thanks

I haven't touched that project for a while now. I was on vacation and am still having issues with my OBD-II interface which I need to move ahead. I should have a replacement interface by next week so I can start tinkering again. I also still need a spare 330 air box.
