View Full Version : Road Rally Speed Question

This question is entirely out of curiosity and doesn't imply my wish to speed or anything of that sort. But what exactly would someone estimate the average speed of the road rally to be? Is the road rally just a cruise through some curvy roads or is it a spirited drive?

I don't recall the average speed, but on the route we took there were two different sections. The first part is up Highway 101 and at least one participant was pulled over going 100+ mph, I believe. "Lucked" out and didn't get a ticket because the CHP officer didn't have any more tickets on which to write. Definitely not a recommended procedure, however. The second part is on Highway 154 which is more about hills and curves than raw speed. Since there's only one lane in each direction, you're not going to be making the kind of speed you might when not in a pack of cars, but it's still enjoyable.

So in answer to your 2nd question, "Yes!" :D

The Bimmerfest Road Rally is not intended to be about speed at all. It's a parade, the longest, most bad-ass BMW caravan that you can possibly imagine. PLEASE do not look at it as an opportunity to exhibit the performance capabilities of your BMW. I strongly urge everyone who participates to obey all posted traffic laws. Nothing could be worse than somebody getting hurt or injured during the event let alone killed. There is no question that Law Enforcement will be out to nail as many as they can during the rally. You don't need to go fast to have fun....

Just curious also, but won't CHP nail us for no front plate and tints? I don't feel like being pulled over for something like that. Any input would be nice. TIA.

Not the CHP based on what we've seen the 5 years prior. They may get you for driving is gross excess of the posted speed limit, but really, if all of the drivers are behaving themselves, then we should be just fine...

Jon, is this where us CCA'ers (http://www.bmwcca.org) can insert a shameless plug for the BMW Car Club (http://www.bimmerfest.com/forums/showthread.php?t=82146&) High Performance Driving Schools (http://www.sincitybmwcarclub.com/driving.html) that are coming up (http://www.bmwclubla.org/calendar.shtml)???

I have tinit and no front, plate and never been looked at twice....think of the zebra...a horse like animal that if you know the purpose of their stripes, do as they do and you'll blend right it with all the other BMWs hehe

Jon,

Where did you dig up that old picture of me? That had to be 4-5 years ago. Just so everyone is clear, I did let the guy go with a verbal warning, but should have "banged" him for impersonating an M3 :). The drive is about having a good time, just don't get carried away by all the excitement. I can probably guarantee that most Officers will have more than enough tickets in their ticket books (unlike last year)! See you at the Fest!

I'm just curious, doesn't the CHP use those newfangled electronic card/license reader gizmos to print out tickets now? I thought they were in widespread use.

I haven't gotten a CHP ticket in many, many years (I drive the speed limit now  )

They did a pilot program for the license readers but the state can't afford to buy them for all the areas, so its pretty much a dead issue. Everything is hand written to give it that "personal touch":)

I drove at A Normal Rate Of Speed (no more than 60) in the 2003 Bimmerfest Road Rally (work prevented me from attending in 2004  (one of the hazards of being a DBA Supporting Your Company's Financial Systems))

The best parts were: following the BMW flag, seeing all kinds of Bimmers and being around like-minded, friendly folks!

Okay, so I confess to having heart failure in the mountains, but I lived to tell about it. :eeps:

If we could have a CHP Beemer escort - that would be fantastic!

As long as you draw a little "happy face" on the bottom, I can't complain!

Now that is a cool idea! We know the CHP and other enforcement officials will be there, but actually having them escort us and set the pace should help minimize our chances of getting tickets.

There should be some donation thing that goes to the CHP for their cause. Hopefully they'll look the other way when something -miniscule- arises.. hope that's not considered bribery :eeps: since the money would go towards a good cause and no one's -asking- to be let off the hook for anything.......
