They actually led the race early on and were very fast when the car was running right - but there was some kind of intermittent electrical problem with engine - then at the end, the engine let go. Daniel gave a nice interview to HACK after the race.

We'll see if it's ready for Bimmerfest.

I got word that the new engine is already in, so hopefully the car will be at the 'fest.

While the tank size really had no impact on the outcome at Daytona (that's why they didn't get DQ'd, just 'fined'), it was an infraction. It sounds like it may have actually really been a mistake instead on intentionally trying to get an edge.

Thanks. It looks a little more beat up now after going to lots of race events last year (it was a hard year on the car - but we did manage to win the BMW CCA class national title). So no more hottie runs on State St. :D

Finlay Motorsports campaigns two BMW race cars in the 2005 Grand American Road Racing Association series -- the Rolex series Dinan-powered BMW Riley Daytona Prototype and Grand Am Cup BMW M3 – and both will be on display in the showroom of BMW Santa Barbara (401 S. Hope Ave.) for Saturday’s 5th annual Bimmerfest event.
BMW has among the strongest, and largest, groups of grass-roots enthusiasts, and the 2005 Bimmerfest will see more than 700 custom and high performance BMWs on display.

BMW Santa Barbara will relocate its entire inventory of new and used cars to make room for exhibitors. The Finlay Motorsports race cars, trucked down from the team’s race shop in Sonoma, will be in the showroom, along with several high performance models from BMW specialists Dinan – which also builds the 500 horsepower BMW V-8 engines that power the Finlay Motorsports Daytona Prototype.

“We race BMWs for a reason, and the passion shown for these cars by this many people is a big part of that reason,” says Rob Finlay. “It’s exciting for us to be part of something like this because these faithful fans are the ones who keep the flame burning for fast cars, hard racing and heroic drivers. They are the foundation on which motorsports is built.”

Caravans of BMWs will be heading toward Santa Barbara from all over the Western U.S. on Friday morning, turning several hotel parking lots into the world’s largest outdoor car wash Friday afternoon, and make any number of Santa Barbara-area restaurant owners very happy indeed on Friday evening.

The event begins at 9:00 AM on Saturday morning. The informal schedule of events includes an autograph session with the Finlay Motorsports drivers, photo sessions, vendor displays, how-to clinics, charity raffle and a BBQ lunch provided by BMW Santa Barbara.

At mid-afternoon, many of the event’s participants will motor off on a highway tour road rally on through Santa Barbara County and the 2-lane asphalt roller coasters that snake through the mountains above the city.

The Finlay Motorsports crew, meanwhile, will transport the race cars back to Northern California to ready them for the next event on the 2005 Grand American series schedule, the U.S. Sports Car Invitational at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca, April 29 – May 1.
The 200-mile/90-lap/2 ½ - hour Grand Am Cup race will start at 2:45 pm, Saturday, April 30. The 250-mile / 112-lap / 2 ¾-hour Rolex Series race is scheduled to take the green flag at 12 noon (PDT) on Sunday, May 1, and will be televised live on the SPEED channel.

BMW fans may be familiar with Memo's name from his driving in IRL, but for BMW fans not familiar with Michael McDowell, you'll enjoy meeting one of the rising young stars in racing as he was the Star Mazda champ last year and a great guy to talk with.

So will less famous (unheard of) BMW club race cars be able to park together? Where should we go if so?

Thanks.

There's no plan for club racers. I don't anticipate many and one of those will be with a vendor display. Just come with the caravan and park on the lot.

Automatic Racing Back on Track for Grand-Am Cup at Laguna Seca

MONTEREY, Calif. – Automatic Racing left their No. 09 and 90 BMW M3s in California between Grand-Am Cup rounds, taking advantage of the extra time on the west coast to gear up for round four at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca on Saturday, April 30.

Jep Thornton and David Russell will be sharing the No. 09 BMW M3. They are currently sixth in the team championship, and less than ten points away from being back in the top three. Thornton has never raced at Laguna Seca, but he is optimistic about making up some points at the challenging 2.238-mile road course.

“Laguna should be a great track for the BMW’s,” said Thornton. “We are looking forward to the race with confidence. It should be quite a race since there will be a lot of drivers who have not had much experience running on the track. And we will have 60 cars on the track at one time. Wow!”

Russell will be competing at Laguna Seca for the first time, as well. He said that, “I think this should be a good track for us. There are a lot of flowing, mid-speed corners that are linked together. It will accommodate a well-balanced car, which is what we’ve got.”

The No. 90 BMW had its share of problems during the last round, beginning with a flat tire that sent Dave Riddle spinning into a wall. The damage to the car has been repaired, and Riddle and co-driver Kris Wilson will be ready for more action at Laguna Seca.

Fans have a chance to see one of the Automatic Racing BMWs this weekend during Bimmerfest on Saturday, April 23rd. The event is being held at the Santa Barbara Auto Group in Santa Barbara, California, and attendees will be treated to over 700 BMWs on display. Admission to the event is free.

Automatic Racing will have two rounds of practice on Friday, April 29. Qualifying will be held at 11:45 am PT for the Grand Sports class, and the 200-mile Grand-Am Cup race will begin at 2:45 pm later that same day.

More information about Automatic Racing can be found at www.automaticracing.com.

Automatic Racing is sponsored by Automatic LLC, LandAir, Engine Studios, Rogue Engineering, Lynch Imports, Moton Shocks and Fikse Wheels.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

TMS Cars On Display For Bimmerfest Weekend

Santa Barbara, CA - 04/22/2005 - Turner Motorsport will have two cars on display at this weekend's Bimmerfest event at Santa Barbara BMW in California. The event is a gathering of BMW enthusiasts from all over the country and is expected to attract over 700 BMWs - many with Turner Motorsport high performance products installed - and 1600 people. In the Santa Barbara BMW showroom will be the Turner Motorsport/H&R Springs BMW M3 racecar and a street version of the BMW 330i racecars.

Turner Motorsport races the M3 and two 330i racecars in the Grand Am Cup series. The team is in California for next weekend's race at Laguna Seca Raceway in Monterey. Turner Motorsport and Bimmerfest have sponsored each other for the past several years. The race will be on Saturday afternoon, April 30 at 2:45pm.

The 2005 E46 M3 was built by Turner Motorsport for endurance racing in the GS class of the Grand Am Cup series. It shares the straight-six engine with the normal road car but produces 385hp thanks to several Turner Motorsport modifications. Equipped with H&R Springs, StopTech Brakes, B&M Racing, Borla Exhaust, Red Line Oil, Pagid, Sunoco, Crocs, and Piloti Driving Shoes, the #96 M3 has scored one win in the first three races of the 2005 season. In addition, the team campaigns two more 330i racecars in the ST class.

The 2004 330i street car was built as a road-legal version of the team's enormously successful E46 racecars. For the past three seasons, a Turner Motorsport/H&R Springs BMW has dominated Speed World Challenge and Grand Am Cup racing - winning championships in 2003 and 2004 and finishing runner-up to the 2004 Grand Am Cup crown. The blue 330i features an H&R/Turner suspension, StopTech brakes, Supersprint exhaust, BBS wheels, and much, much more. It serves as a rolling catalog of the Turner Motorsport product range.

Part of the Turner Motorsport race crew will be on hand to answer questions and display various components of each car. Both cars will be on display in the showroom.

If you miss us at Bimmerfest we hope to see you at Laguna Seca!
