Hi -- a co-worker who used to travel frequently to Germany passed along a few issues of a newletter called Gemütlichkeit (which is German for comfortable), re. travel to Germany/Austria/Switzerland. They have a site with helpful info, some of which is for subscribers only, but much of which is freely available to anyone, check it out: http://www.gemut.com .

One of the items in the travel info section on the right is re. driving on the Autobahn: http://www.gemut.com/News.asp?NewsID=7 They also have links to listings of 10 "essential destinations" for each of the 3 countries, also on the right side of the page.

Hope someone finds this helpful...

I've been a subscriber to Gemütlichkeit for several years now. It is a bit pricey for the 10 issue, 8 page newletter, but the information is definatley worth it. If you're planning an ED trip or any trip to visit Germany/Austria/Switzerland, the cost of 1 years subscription plus the previous years back issues more than pays for it self when it helps you find that perfect hotel at the perfect price.

I'n the past six years that I've subscribed to the newletter, I've visited Germany about 8 times. Most of the time we stay with family but on a few of our excursions, we've used the reviews in helping us choose hotels and restaurants. Out of 11 or 12 places we've sampled from their "recommended" list, we've been very satisfied. They tend to steer you towards the smaller, family owned Gasthaus with fantastic service and reasonable prices

These guys personally visit the hotels and restaurants that have reviewed so its all first hand information. Additionally, they provide a great travel planning service with discount airfare, car rentals, Eurail passes, and hotel accomodations...
