I noticed something weird on (at least) front passenger side window when my wife was getting mail the other day.

Repro steps:
1. Front passenger side windows all the way down
2. Open front passenger door
3. Pull up on the front passenger window switch on driver's armrest, if you pull on it pass resistance point, you are supposed to auto-up the window. Well it does not work that way if the door is open. It will only raise the window when you pull on the switch
4. Close front passenger door and window auto-up works again.

Is this by design? Why?

I have not tried this on other windows yet.

I suppose this is a safety feature. Did you try it on the driver's door and/or the rear doors?

Yes, it is a safety feature so that your hand won't get caught in the window-if you were using your hand to pull open/shut the door by the window frame.

Its so that when someone is getting out of the car is going to shut your door while the window is rolling up it doesnt pinch their arm or fingers. BMW has been doing this with all their cars since 99 I think. Just a safety feature nothing wrong with your car.
