View Full Version : Anyone with service experience at Wide World of Cars, or other NYC area dealers?
I need to bring my car in for a NY State Inspections/Emissions, and an oil change, and BMW of Manhattan can give me an appointment in 4 weeks (never mind that my temporary inspection only gives me 10 days).
Any other NY dealers in the NYC area that you can recommend?

Did you check with Alan F. or Big Al:dunno:
Ralleye, BMW of Bayside and Life Quality Motor Sales, Inc are in the general area aren't they?
Did you consider using a regular garage for the inspection and having your service done outside of the city?

Long Island is way too miserable for me to want to navigate for service. :D Seriously though, I picked Wide World of Cars because it was far enough out of the city that they could take me earlier than 4 weeks. I figure as long as they're not loosening anything, I'm ok with them for service (unless someone tells me not to go there on any terms). :D

You could try Difeo BMW in Tenafly New Jersey-- they seem to be able to fit appointments in w/ a couple days of notice. Not too far from the city.

Difeo can't do NY inspection/emissions can they?

Alee-
Good point-- but actually they may be able to-- often dealers that are close to statelines can do the inspections for their neighboring states. Give them a call.

Alee,
If you find that you can get your NY inspection done in Jersey I would strongly suggest Park Ave BMW (http://www.parkavebmw.com/) in Maywood. It's not far out of the city, and the service is great. (keep them in mind down the road too)

Thanks for the tip on Park ave-- i'll have to give them a try-- i must admit that i haven't been completely thrilled by Difeo-- but they've been better than all the NY dealers i've tried.

So I guess the Long Island Expressway is not one of your top 5 favorite roads to drive.:D I use Rallye. Just had my inspection done in June. The only PITA with them is that if you want a BMW loaner you need to make an appointment in advance. I remember when I had the fan recall done, I had to wait 7 weeks for an appointment if I wanted a BMW loaner. But if you need to get back into the city, they run a shuttle van to the Manhassett station of the LIRR. It is about a 30 minute train ride into Penn Station. So as long as your car is ready the same day, the train is the way to go.

One giant and miserable parking lot. :D
I hear good things about Rallye, so I may try them out for my next major interval. BMW of Manhattan is my designated dealer to do my sticky pedal replacement, so I may as well sample the rest of the NYC area dealers. :)
30 minute train ride isn't too bad into Penn Station.

I just made an appointment with Park Ave BMW... so far, I'm very happy. Spoke with Larry Weiner in Service, and followed with 2 emails with him re: my sticky gas pedal situation. 2 other dealers (Wide World of Cars and BMW of Manhattan) gave me a runaround about getting my sticky pedal swapped, whining about how they had to evaluate it first... Larry recognized the problem, ordered the new pedal and set an appointment for the pedal swap. Great attention so far!
Thanks for the recommendation!

I may be relocating to Southern Rockland County, NY or Northern Bergen County, NJ in the near future. There are 5 BMW dealers nearby, and I am interested in hearing about your experiences with their service departments. The dealers are -
Wide World of Cars, Spring Valley, NY
Orange county BMW, Highland Falls, NY
Park Avenue BMW, Maywood, NJ
Prestige BMW, Ramsey, NJ
DeFeo BMW, Tenafly, NJ
Comments?
Park Ave BMW was by far the friendliest dealer I've been to, but getting an appointment took a few weeks. However, they were very professional, and didn't screw around.
Wide World of Cars was the easiest to get an appointment at. Was also very professional.
Given a choice, I'd go back to Park Ave BMW again as my first choice.
Alee -- just out of curiosity, can you make an appointment directly with Larry Weiner? I see he is the assistant service manager. I asked because I just called the service department and made an appointment to take a look at my alarm, and the guy who answered the phone said something like "oh, I'm not sure the alarm comes with a motion sensor." If he is going to be my service consultant as well I am going to have a big, big problem.

I made my appointment with Larry through email. He seemed to be extremely knowledgeable.
However, he was not the service consultant I dealt with when I brought my car in. Someone else took care of me.

Having some experience with BMW service departments, I can tell you that they get very busy in waves, and when this happens, everyone tries to help out. It is not uncommon to have the receptionist in the service department also answering calls and making appointments throughout the day. The service manager will also help out if possible to make sure that your call is answered. When you drop off the car, you will obviously not work with the receptionist or the service manager; rather, they will take your info and make an appointment for you with one of the receptionists. If a receptionist or manager makes an appointment for you, you can always request to work with a particular service advisor if you have worked with them in the past.

Thanks for your reply. Was Park Avenue BMW able to perform a New York state inspection?

That's what I used to think before I moved to Los Angeles. The LIE has nothing on the 405!:( :(

Park Ave BMW does not do NY state inspections. However, I found a place on 11th Ave and somewhere around 55th that is open 7 days a week that did my state inspection on a walk-in basis this past Saturday morning. It looks like a nice clean shop, and they put plastic over the seat, steering wheel and shift knob before working on the car. I'll look for the card when I get home tonight.

Thanks for the info about Park Avenue BMW. After your service appointment for the alarm, would you mind posting a reply to this thread? I'd like to hear if your Park Avenue experience is as favorable as Alee's. Thanks!

After having my first service appointment this morning at Park Ave BMW, I second Alee's recommendation. What I needed done was relatively minor -- oil change, program keys, etc. -- and incidentally Larry Weiner was the service consultant that helped me -- but I still appreciated the fact that everything was done quickly and efficiently. I thought the people there were very pleasant and knowledgeable, and they even apologized for my having to wait 15 more minutes than the original estimate. I was treated like a customer, as oppose to some shops where I feel like they're doing me a favor by talking to me. They also have plenty of loaner cars available (I waited for the service, so didn't take out a loaner car). Overall, I was quite happy with the experience and I would definitely go back there.
P.S. the place I found to do NY state inspection was called Cybert Tire and Car Care on 11th AVenue between 51st and 52nd street. Look like a clean shop.

rkny - Thanks for the follow-up post. Sounds like Park Avenue's service dept is a winner.
You mentioned the supply of loaner cars. Would you happen to know if they give loaners to folks that did not purchase their cars from Park Avenue?

hmm, not sure, but I didn't get the impression that the loaner cars were limited to people who had bought cars from them -- I did buy my car from there, but I think they asked me whether I needed a loaner before they ascertained whether I bought from there or not.
