Broken shift knob - '95 540i (auto)

Just checked my car, got it from a friend recently.

Found the shift knob is broken. The release trigger sinked into the knob/handle. When I lifted the knob/handle, the rod just falled out. I just wonder if anyone BTDT, fixing the broken shift knob. (I know, replace it w/ a new one will fix it...but I'd rather keep the original knob.)

BTW, just wonder if anyone here has ever fiexed a broken shift knob? (May be it's easier to replace w/ a new one... Hummm, saw quite a few on on Fleabay, like $20+shipping...it's not cheap...?)
