This is a common problem for E36 BMW. I read a plastic piece breaks and causes the key to spin. Mine does it also. I just remove the key and try again. I hear the only solution is to install a new ignition switch. If you can put up with a small annoyance you can save a lot of money! :yikes:

My recently purchased 97 318i does that also. I noticed that if I leave the steering wheel turned to the side and I don't hear a click in the steering ignition switch after turning off ignition, it will especially occur. My mechanic told me that it is normal to occur, "when key is not fully inserted or key is turned too quickly. This is designed so if car is broken into and someone tries to turn key cylinder with force it just spins free and steering cannot be turned" (per note left for me on paperwork). HOWEVER, I too think it is a sign that the switch is going bad. I will continue to pull key out and try again when it occurs to avoid expensive repair.

It will eventually get to the point where it's impossible to start the car. Personally, I'd fix it NOW rather than wait until I got stranded.
