My 535i 5 speed vibrates at 2000 rpm, sometimes moderate, sometimes light. I've narrowed it down to the dual mass flywheel and wonder if there is an alternative to the $1500.00 part from BMW. I have heard that the earlier 535 will work with some modification, but maybe there is another option? I'd appreciate any input. Thanks. jtw3

I hear it's pretty common to replace the stock flywheel with one from an e28... It's a whole lot lighter and I don't think much modification is involved. I think UUC makes one too that's even lighter (8lbs) but that'll cost you about the same $1500 :)

Your best option for that is the original BMW flywheel from the '91-'93 US-market E34 M5. It's a solid flywheel (it will never break on you like the dual mass), and of course you would use the matching E34 M5 clutch. Last time I checked, dealer price on this flywheel was around $550 and the matching clutch kit is around $375.

flywheel part number: 11 22 1 312 491
bolts (8 req'd): 11 22 1 744 338

This combination will give you a very nice lightweight flywheel effect without sacrificing driveability... you will have the same experience as any 3.6l M5 owner, especially as your car's Getrag 265 has just about the same feel as the M5's Getrag 280.

As I mentioned, you can use the OEM BMW M5 clutch, or UUC can offer you the Sachs Power Clutch for a bit more clamping force and heat capacity. If you want to go a bit more robust, we have our own Stage1 Performance Organic clutch, and even a Stage3 6-puck ceramic/metallic design for hardcore drag-racing and turbo/supercharger applications over 550hp.

after obtaining the M5 flywheel and clutch disc and pressure plate, i removed the transmission and found that the clutch disc did not fit the input shaft. ( different splines ). now i've ordered a disc from an e28. we'll see how that goes.
