Interesting where Scion and MINI are, considering where their respective parents are.

Wow even with all my E46's problems last year BMW scored that high.

Really this is good news for BMW and BMW owners.

Remeber this is only problems for 2005 MY in first 90 days... still a good sign though. :)

Well, the Initial Quality survey only looks at like the first 90 days or something. I think BMW SAG syndrome doesn't wear off for that long, and during that tine the problems don't bother anyone. I believe there is a more long-term survey, where BMW doesn't do quite as well.

Wow, quite a few surprises this year!

Lexus is still the best.
Jaguar got 2nd place????
BMW got 3rd  but Mini is below average. :thumbdwn:
Hyundai and Audi ahead of Honda and Acura!! :dunno:
Porsche, VW, and Mazda close to the bottom of the list. :thumbdwn:

Interesting. Subaru is like #1 in reliability, but way down on this list. If it's just a SAG effect, you'd think Porsche wouldn't be at the bottom.

WTF is SAG

WTF is SAG
"Silly-Ass Grin" (a patented BMW feature)... :D

Btw, how do you account for the disparity bet. Buick and Pontiac?

:dunno:

In my memory (admitedly short) BMW has never scored very well with J.D. Power Initial Quality, or with any of their other surveys. So something else besides SAG must be in play.

They must be doing something right because BMW was in 12th place in last year's J.D. Power initial quality survey but moved up to third this year.

The Regensberg BMW plant received J.D. Power's Silver award (2nd place) for highest quality among European assembly plants and the Munich BMW plant tied with Porsche's 911 plant in Stuttgart for the Bronze award (3rd place).

BMW was rated best brand in Strategic Vision's recently released quality survey. It measures overall satisfaction rather than just problems encountered. I guess you could say that would include factors such as the SAG.

The 3-Series not only wins in its category but has the highest score of all cars in all categories.

are bull sh-- for the most part. an audi dealer told me that the reason lexus scores so high is not so much that they have fewer problems, it is the way the problems are handled by service departments that wins them so many fans. we all know german cars are higher maintenance than japanese. it is no secret. it is nice however to see bmw moving up in the ratings though since perception is everything when it comes to resale.

It is very surprising to see Mercedes and Audi move up so high in the ranks. :dunno:

So the industry avg is 121 per 100, US brands 119, Euro brands 124 and Asian avg is 137
Interesting. I`m certainly surprised by many of these individual ratings, go figure... :dunno:

Still means something if Lexus owners walk away happier than BMW owners from the service bay, don't it?

Lexus at the top, I'm not surprised. :neener:
BMW not too far behind. I'm surprised. Must be doing something right for someone, too bad it hasn't been me, yet.

I agree. I can't begin to say how disappointed I am with the quality of BMW's service. :flush:

The Lexus service department will replace anything with no questions asked. They'll even come to your house to do it. My sister's IS had a cd jammed in the in-dash changer. She gave Lexus a call and they had someone at her house a couple days later installing a brand new in-dash cd changer.

Surveys are nice, but I've always thought that 90 days was too short a time to find out if a car has problems. Hell, the "honeymoon" with your new baby isn't even over yet. These surveys ought to be done after at least a year has elapsed.

:stupid:

The JD Power 3-year study is where it's at. Search for my name and you'll find one from 2003 that looks much more "expected".

Though Lexus is still at the top. :)

i agree, what's the point really?? i think the only reason they do it is because it's easier to track down the owners while the cars are new and before they get resold or they move etc.

J.D. Power is an independent organisation, but from whom do they get their income? Does it come from the auto makers? If so, they would have a vested interest in producing surveys that show cars in the best light possible.

I have never heard of the J.D. Power 3-year survey before. Thanks for the info, Rowag.

I agree a 90 day survey is not the final word on car quality, but it does mean something. If one car is having almost double the problems in the first 90 days than a second car, I would lean toward the car with fewer problems.

From WSJ story on Power survey "The primary audience of the J.D. Power survey is the auto industry itself. J.D. Power sells detailed breakdowns of the survey data to the auto makers, which also pay the Westlake Village, Calif., consulting firm to use its ratings in their ads. Consumers can check an abbreviated version of the survey results on the firm's Web site, jdpower.com."
